1923: Jeanne La Mar Receives the First Report Boxing License in the United States

(AUG 26) We have found throughout the years that we find many believing that this or that female professional boxer was the first to receive a professional boxing license in the United States.  When I first began covering the history of women's boxing----even I had it wrong!  I thought that it had all began with Caroline Svendsen, who received a professional boxing license in the state of Nevada in 1975.  Little did I know that before 1975, that Barbara Buttrick and others were licensed in the 1950s-1960s, according to Buttrick, an icon in the sport from that era.  Full Story

(AUG 21) Last night at the Texas Troubadour Theatre, in Nashville, Tennessee, Precious Harris-McCray, 153¼, of Brooklyn, New York, won a six-round split decision over Sonya Dreiling, 158¾, of Albertville, Alabama. (AUGUST 19, 2024) Yesterday, I received news that 1940-1950's pioneer female boxer, Pat Emerick passed away yesterday at the age of 93 years old.  In 2019, I had the pleasure of meeting Pat and her family at our International Women's Boxing Hall of Fame that was held in Brisbane, California, where Pat was inducted into the class of 2019.  I would like to re-share a great article that was written about Emerick in a tribute to her trailblazing efforts in the sport of women's boxing, when women's boxing was not cool. Ryu Kyung Suh and Kanae Maehara Fight to a Draw

(AUG 17) Minimumweight contender Ryu Kyung Suh of South Korea and Kanae Maehara of Japan fought to a majority draw in a six-round bout at the Yugwansun Gymnasium in Cheonan, South Korea on Thursday, August 15. The total scores of the judges were 58-56 in favor of Suh and 57-57 from the other two judges. The fight was in the minimumweight division which has a weight limit of 105 pounds. Tinta Smith gets big rematch before televised fight

(AUGUST 9) Just announced Hamilton's own Tinta Smith will get her rematch against Nailini Helu on the 17th of August at Te Rapa Racecourse before her televised fight on the 7th of September. Tinta Smith has had a busy year. She drew with Trish Vaka in March and won the first-ever New Zealand national cruiserweight title against Sequita Hemingway in May. (AUGUST 3) PARIS – Alyssa Mendoza fell short in the round of 16 with a 4-1 loss to Brazil’s Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu earlier yesterday (Friday) at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.  Mendoza kept the fight close as each featherweight boxer took one of the opening two rounds by a score of 3-2 to enter the final round tied up. Cerqueira Romeu ultimately won the final round 5-0 to earn the 4-1 split-decision victory over Mendoza.  Full Story

Olympic journey ends for USA boxers Jennifer Lozano & Morelle McCane

(AUG 1) PARIS  – Team USA fell short in both bouts Thursday morning as Jennifer Lozano's (Laredo, Texas) and Morelle McCane's (Cleveland, Ohio) Olympic journeys concluded. Lozano fell short to Finland's Pihla Kaivo-Oja via a unanimous decision. As for McCane, she lost to Uzbekistan's Navbakhor Khamidova on a 3-2 split decision. McCane went down 4-1 after the first round but responded in the second round with a 4-1 score for herself. Going into the third round all tied up, the Cleveland boxer came up just short and was defeated on a 3-2 split decision.  Full Story
