Las Vegas: Cecilia ‘The First Lady’ Braekhus to fight Maricela ‘La Diva’ Cornejo This Saturday
August 8, 2024

(AUG 8) LAS VEGAS, NV – On Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, in Las Vegas, Cecilia ‘The First Lady’ Braekhus, (37-2-1, 9 KOs), of Bergen, Norway will be fighting Maricela ‘La Diva’ Cornejo, (19-6), of Los Angeles, California. Braekhus was originally supposed to fight Ema Kozin, but she was unable to obtain a VISA to enter the United States. The two will be fighting for the vacant WBC Interim Super Welterweight title.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions, Braekhus vs. Cornejo will headline the Golden Boy Fight Night: Bohachuk vs. Ortiz Prelims which will stream on the Golden Boy You Tube Channel.

In a press release they wrote the following: “Cornejo is returning to action on a three fight winning streak following a 10-round middleweight championship fight against Claressa Shields on June 3, 2023 for the WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO and Ring Magazine titles in Detroit, MI. Two of her additional world title challenges were against current WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn, both fights fought over the distance of ten rounds.”

“The first women’s undisputed champion, a title she held in the welterweight division for six years (2014-2020), Braekhus seeks a return to world championship glory following a controversially scored majority draw with Terri Harper on October 7, 2023 in Sheffield, England. The bout was contested for the WBA and WBO Super Welterweight World Titles in Harper’s home country.”

Braekhus, known as 'The First Lady of Boxing,' is eager to regain her status as a world champion. Despite the setback against Harper, where they fought to a majority draw, she showcased her skills and resilience, leaving no doubt that she still possesses the talent to compete at the highest level.

Now, facing Cornejo, Braekhus aims to prove that she remains a force to be reckoned with in the super welterweight division. With both fighters hungry for victory and the vacant WBC Interim Super Welterweight title on the line, this promises to be an solid match."
