Tinta Smith gets big rematch before televised fight
by Benjamin Watt
August 9, 2024

(AUGUST 9) Just announced Hamilton's own Tinta Smith will get her rematch against Nailini Helu on the 17th of August at Te Rapa Racecourse before her televised fight on the 7th of September.

Tinta Smith has had a busy year. She drew with Trish Vaka in March and won the first-ever New Zealand national cruiserweight title against Sequita Hemingway in May. Now, she is booked for two fights in August and September.

She will get a rematch against the South Pacific Super Middleweight champion Nailini Helu. The two first fought each other in August 2022, when Helu picked up her first win in professional boxing in six years, winning her first official boxing title. However, it was a close fight that ended in a majority decision, making this fight destined to happen again eventually. Helu had been stating in the universe that she wanted this fight and would take on any opponent, but ultimately, this was the fight she wanted to take.

Helu is a Tongan-born boxer with a massive amateur boxing background. She is a three-time New Zealand amateur boxing champion. She is promoted by Bruce Glozier and trained by the legendary Lolo Heimuli. She has fought with some of the best boxers in the world, including WBO Light Heavyweight champion Geovana Peres, two-division world champion Lani Daniels, and two world title contenders Alrie Meleisea and Desley Robinson.

Smith already had a fight booked in September, but Dion had another show on on August 17th, Smith, of course, will headline the show. Smith naturally fights around the super middleweight class, has been fighting above her weight to get the fights she wants and to keep busy. This was a good move for her as she won her New Zealand title, making history in the process. Now Smith will be going back down the Super Middleweight for this fight.

She will be keeping busy as she will also be fighting on September 7th, when she takes on kickboxer Tiani Barlow on the Lani Daniels vs. Bolatito Oluwole world title fight undercard, which will be televised on Sky TV. Also on the card will be John Parker vs. Alivereti Kauyaca for the WBA Oceania Cruiserweight title.

Tinta Smith vs Nailini Helu II will happen at Te Rapa Racecourse on 17th of August. The fight will be for the South Pacific Super Middleweight title. For Tickets go to https://www.nabbysboxinggym.com/
