Elia Carranza Wins by TKO over Chris Namus
by Ron Scarfone
August 28, 2024

(AUG 28) Elia “Soul Snatcher” Carranza of Miami, Florida defeated former IBF world super welterweight champion Chris “El Bombon Asesino” Namus of Montevideo, Uruguay on Saturday, August 24. The bout was scheduled for eight rounds in the super welterweight division.

The event was originally scheduled to be at the Miccosukee Casino & Resort in Miami, but the venue was changed to the Reception Palace Ballrooms which is also in Miami.

Carranza weighed  in at 152.8 lbs, and Namus weighed 152.4. Carranza is currently rated as the No. 3 contender in the middleweight division by the computerized ratings of the International Boxing Organization (IBO).

Carranza has been previously rated as a super welterweight when she fought in that weight class. Carranza fought about two months ago in June of 2024 as a middleweight against contender Kaitlin LaVigne. In that bout, Carranza won against LaVigne by unanimous decision in a six-round bout.

Namus won the vacant IBF super welterweight title in August 2017 against Yamila Reynoso by unanimous decision. After one successful title defense, Namus lost the title in December 2018 to Marie Eve Dicaire by unanimous decision. Namus won a rematch against Reynoso by unanimous decision in a six-round bout in April 2019.

Namus has not won since that fight. Namus lost by unanimous decision against Ema Kozin in October 2020 which was for three world middleweight titles (WBC interim, WIBA, and WBF).  Namus received another world title shot in February 2022 against Natasha Jonas for the vacant WBO world super welterweight title.

Namus lost by TKO to Jonas in the second round. Jonas is currently the IBF welterweight champion.  In addition, Namus lost to super welterweight contender Mary Spencer by TKO in the first round in June 2022. Spencer is currently rated as the No. 2 contender in the super welterweight division by the IBO. Namus returned to the ring after a two-year hiatus for this fight against Carranza.

This boxing event was promoted by Laura Ching of M&R Boxing Promotions. Video of the entire event was uploaded to the YouTube account of M&R Boxing Promotions. The time stamp for Carranza vs. Namus is 3:38:00.

Both boxers were mostly throwing the left jab in the first round. In the second round, Carranza landed an overhand right to the head of Namus which stunned Namus. Carranza was able to quickly land another similar punch which knocked Namus down.

Namus got up and survived the round. Rounds three and four were close and competitive rounds. Carranza landed a straight right to the head in round five which knocked down Namus. Namus got up and the round was soon over which was fortunate for Namus. With Namus against the ropes in round six, Carranza landed a straight right to the head. After more punches to the body and head from Carranza, the referee stopped the fight at 1:27 of the sixth round. Carranza won by TKO and improved her record to 9-1, 3 KOs. All three of Carranza’s wins by knockout have occurred in the super welterweight division.

Namus showed a champion’s heart, but Carranza’s punching power was too much to overcome. Namus’ record is now 25-9, 8 KOs. Namus has lost her last three fights by TKO, but against elite boxers.

International Women’s Boxing Hall of Famer Ann-Marie Saccurato was one of the people in Carranza’s corner. Saccurato currently works as a strength & conditioning coach and performance specialist.   Saccurato was a WBC lightweight champion during her pro boxing career.  Carranza has a career in law enforcement in Broward County, Florida. She is a deputy sheriff with Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO).
