(DEC 4) The 2016 IABA
Women’s Elite championships drew to a close at the National
Stadium in Dublin at the weekend with some excellent
performances from a number of boxers, and not all of them
winners.
The bout which attracted most attention in the National media
was that in which young Clonmel BC boxer, Shauna O’Keeffe gloved
off against Olympic and five times world champion Katie Taylor
making a welcome return to the ring.

DEC 1) The AIBA has just
confirmed the names of those competing in the 2016 Rio Test
event December 4/6 and among the original entries were U.S
Olympic trials winners Mikaela Mayer (60kg) and Virginia
Fuchs(51kg),as well as reigning Olympic Gold medallist Claressa
Shields(75) kg. Sadly, WBAN has learned that due to injury the
Olympic champion announced Monday that she has withdrawn though
will still travel with the team to Rio. So none of the current

Finland’s Mira Potkonen missed the opportunity of defending her
Golden Girl championship title when this year’s event took place
at the Boråshallen, Borås, Sweden this weekend. Sadly Mira had to withdraw due to
injuries sustained in recent tournaments and underwent treatment
in her home country in an effort to be back at her best for next
year’s European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey and the AIBA World

GB Championships set for EIS

Boxing Association (BABA) has named 12 boxers to compete in the
GB Boxing Championship 2015 at the English Institute of Sport in
Sheffield on Thursday 26 November 2015 (Doors open at 6.00pm,
boxing begins at 6.30pm).
This tournament though should not be confused with the National
Elite Championships which for 2016 are due to take place
(quarter finals, semi-finals and finals) between April and May.

took a day longer than she hoped, but lightweight Mikaela Mayer
(Los Angeles, Calif.) achieved her dream of becoming Olympic

AIBA sets new dates for 2016 AIBA

Boxing Association (AIBA) has set new dates for the 2016 Women’s
World Elite championships in Astana, Kazakhstan much to the
displeasure of some of its own National Federations who say they
were not consulted on the matter. The championships were
due from Jan 24-Feb 6 but will now take place between May
19-27.Bearing in mind that boxers of most nations have been
preparing for the original January date this seriously disrupts
their training schedule and as a result it is understood that

suffered two 'shock' defeats on the opening day of the
prestigious Feliks Stamm Memorial tournament in Warsaw late
Wednesday.
AIBA World no.1 Marlen Esparza exited the tournament in the
preliminary round at the hands of the unranked Irish woman,
Ceire Smith from Cavan BC 1:2 on a split decision.

2015 EUBC Women’s Youth and Junior championships came to a close
at the SportHall in Keszthely, Hungary on Saturday.
Club team-mate Orla Garvey and Shauna O’Callaghan of Clann Naofa
had to settle for silver against Russian opponents in the Junior
feather and light classes.
Broadhurst beat Italy’s Francesca Matusciello on a majority
decision to secure 57kg gold. She told us later:
