AIBA Confirm 3 x 3 minute rounds re-introduced for women in 2017-by Michael O'Neill

(JUNE 24)  Indian media sources are yesterday reporting that the 5 times AIBA World champion – and AIBA’s own Ambassador- Mary Kom has been ‘denied’ a ‘wildcard’ place in Rio 2016.  As yet, despite widespread media speculation, throughout the world, no official comment from the AIBA.  The good news is that despite this snub from the International Boxing Association, ‘Magnificent Mary’ says she has no plans to retire and hopes to coach future Indian stars....Full Story
   









 
The field is set for Rio 2016 - almost!

(JUNE 8)  Following the 2016 AIBA Women’s World championships at the Barys Arena in Astana last month we now know the names of the majority of boxers who will be representing their countries in Rio in August.  After the second, and final, qualifying event for women boxers taking place in Astana, 33 Olympians are known, and only three remain to be determined.

Boxing: AIBA rules amended so that Pro boxers - but Males only - can compete in Rio 2016 -by Michael O'Neill -June 4, 2016  (JUNE 4)  There’s widespread anger in AIBA and Professional boxing circles following the news from the International Boxing Association (AIBA) that Professional boxers can now stake a claim for a place in Rio 2016. Few ‘amateurs’ are prepared to be quoted thus far for fear of being disowned by their own Federation or by their sport’s Governing body.

Of the eighteen teams with boxers still in the competition, Great Britain now have nine athletes (inc. eight men) keeping their Olympic dreams alive, Armenia and Azerbaijan five and the Ukraine and host nation Turkey, four. Mary Kom goes marching on in Quian'an Olympic qualifier - Tuesday's update

China set to take all three Women's Golds in Qian 'an? by Michael O'Neill -April 1, 2016  (APR 1) The ASBC Boxing Confederation Championships (& Olympic qualifiers) have now reached the final stages in Qian ‘an China with Saturday seeing all three women’s finals. Ren Cancan, Yin Junhua and Li Qian are strong favourites for the Gold medals especially on ‘home soil’ and with several thousand home fans cheering their every move. (MAR 1)  The Asian Federation Olympic qualifiers for Rio open in Quian’an, China on March 26th but even if boxers like Mary Kom, Sarita Devi Laishram and male counterparts should qualify they are still in danger of being excluded by the AIBA from Rio 2016.

(FEB 21) Indian media outlets reported February 15th that several of its leading boxers, both male and female were extremely angry at the delays in finalising a new Indian Boxing Federation to replace the previous organisation banned some two years ago by the AIBA – indeed among the most severe critics was Mary Kom who was quoted thus:  "Yes, they (the boxers) are all demotivated. EUBC confirms changes of date & venue for AOB European Olympic Qualifiers -by Michael O'Neill -January 22, 2016  (JAN 22) The European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) has today confirmed that the dates and venue of the 2016 AOB European qualifiers have been changed. This brief note appears on the organisation's website Friday morning.  "The AIBA Executive Committee approved the change of the dates and the Host City of the upcoming AOB European Olympic Qualifiers.
