Women’s Boxing Action this Weekend

(JULY 31) WBAN’s wrap up
for this coming weekend’s boxing action in women’s boxing
worldwide. On Friday, August 1st,
the action begins on boxing cards on the following:
ARGENTINA: At the Club Unión Eléctrica, in Cordoba, Argentina,
in an eight round bout, Carolina Marcela Gutierrez Gaite,
21-4-1 (13KO), of Cordoba will be fighting in a non-title bout
against Anahi Yolanda Salles, 4-12-2 (1KO), of Buenos
Aires. Gaite has fought two Interim WBO Bantamweight world title
fights in 2014, losing both of those bouts by split decision.
For Salles, this will be the third bout with Gaite, with the
last fight with Gaite being a no contest, and in 2012 having a
six-round split draw.

Update: Phyllis Kugler, a boxer in the 1950s

(JULY 30) In 2002, WBAN had the pleasure of interviewing
Phyllis Kugler, pioneer boxer from the 1950s, who fought Joann Hagen,
Barbara Buttrick, and was one of the boxers in the past who helped pave the
way for female boxers of today. We received an update on Kugler, and
was notified that she passed away on March 6, 2014.

the United States, where the vast majority of female fighters
reside and train, has progressed, (if that term can be stretched
far enough to apply), along much the same lines as the past
five, quite possibly ten years have unfolded in the sport. To
use what we used to call a twenty-five cent word, the sport, for
far too long, has existed in a state of stasis; a sense of

fashion with four final round victories on Sunday in Mexico

weight bout pitting Alisah McPhee against Peggy Maerz proved to
be the most exciting bout on the undercard of the Strawson
Boxing promotion at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo BC on Friday
July 18th. The fight was an interesting match up of power, which
Maerz embodied, and quickness and accuracy, seen in McPhee’s
punches. The momentum shifted between the two women throughout
the six round bout, and as both women are British Columbia
residents, the crowd was split in their support....

Brazil: Duda Yankovich Suffers a

(July 1) On Friday night, June 11, lightweight amateur standout Jen
Hamann will make her professional debut against Ariel Beck (3-0), in a
scheduled four round bout at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA on a
card promoted by Gary Shaw Promotions. Hamman from Seattle,
Washington, compiled an amateur record of 31-4, which included the 125
pound National Amateur Championship in 2013, and the 2013 125 pound
Intercontinental championship. “It's exciting to take the step into the
ring as a professional,” she said. “July 11 will be one of the most
