(APRIL 29) NEW YORK--On Saturday night at the Ajou University, Suwon, South Korea, former world title challenger Jessica Camara, 135, scored a huge win as she defeated the "undefeated" and former two-division world champion Myun Hi Choi, 135, to win the WBA Gold Championship in the lightweight division via a split decision in Choi's home country of South Korea.  Final judges scores were 94-96, 96-94, and 98-92.  Full Story

(APRIL 27) Two female bouts to take place tonight at the Mónaco Hotel & Resort in Villa Carlos Paz, Córdoba, Argentina. Carla Ayelen Merino, 13-2-0 (2KO), of Cordoba, and Micaela Milagros Lujan, 14-1-1 (5KO), from San Luis, Argentina, will go head to head in a ten-round title bout, vying for the South American Super Flyweight title as well as the Federation Argentinian Super Flyweight title. (APR 27) Tonight at the Save Mart Arena, Fresno, California, Marlen Esparza, 114, 14-1-0 (1KO), of Houston, Texas, will be fighting Gabriela Celeste Alaniz, 111 ¼, 14-1-1 (6KO), of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The two will be fighting ten rounds of action, but only Alaniz will be vying for Esparza’s four title belts. Full Story

(APRIL 24) Today (Australia time zone) at the Hordern Pavilion, Sydney, Australia, Jasmine Parr, 114 3/4, of Queensland, Australia, won by a fifth round TKO [1:01] over Sarah Watt, 114 1/4, of Australia, in a scheduled six round bout. In a second female bout, Shanell Dargan, 121, of Austraila, won by a six-round majority decision over Christine Gillespie, 120 1/2, of Nelson, New Zealand. Final judges scores were 57-57, 58-56, and 58-56.

Pioneers of Women’s Boxing in the Modern Age

(APRIL 23) Although women’s boxing has been effectively banned many of the years in the sport’s history, there have always been female boxers. There are anecdotal mentions of women’s boxing at the beginning of the 18th century and the first known advertised bout is dated from 1722.  But until relatively recently, women were simply not issued licenses to fight and that severely impeded the potential for women’s boxing to become popular.  Full Story

 (APRIL 14) Last night at the Casal Cultural i Recreatiu, in Castellbisbal, Spain, Tania Alvarez, of Barcelona, Cataluña, Spain, won a ten-round unanimous decision over Maria Cecchi, of Lazio, Italy.  The two were fight for the vacant EBU European Super Bantamweight belt.  Final judges scores were 94-96, on all card.  Tania is now 11-1-0 (2KO), and Cecchi record is now 10-3-0 (2KO).

Where to Focus Efforts for Raising the Profile of Women’s Boxing

Women’s boxing could be huge right now based on the talent at the top of its divisions alone. Tinta Smith gets a second chance at historical New Zealand title

(APRIL 3) Tinta Smith will get a second chance at the inaugural New Zealand national (PBCNZ version) Cruiserweight title after her first attempt ended in a draw.  Tinta Smith took on Trish Vaka on the 16th of March for the New Zealand title which ended in a split decision draw. Unfortunately due to the draw the title will remain vacant. However, the two boxers claim to be dual champions, but in professional boxing, it does not work that way and the title remains vacant.  Full Story
