(APRIL 3) Tinta Smith will
get a second chance at the inaugural New Zealand national (PBCNZ
version) Cruiserweight title after her first attempt ended in a
draw.
Tinta Smith took on Trish Vaka on
the 16th of March for the New Zealand title which ended in a
split decision draw. Unfortunately due to the draw the title
will remain vacant. However, the two boxers claim to be dual
champions, but in professional boxing, it does not work that way
and the title remains vacant.
Smith will be moving on to her next professional boxing fight
where she will attempt to claim the title again on May 11th at
Dion McNabney's 18th edition of Young Guns. Smith will be taking
on the New Zealand (Pro Box NZ version) Heavyweight champion,
Sequita Hemingway.
Hemingway is a retired professional rugby player playing for
Manawatu Cyclones for the Farah Palmer Cup and a professional
boxer. She has fought some of the best boxers from Australasia
including the two-division world champion Lani Daniels, World
title challenger Alrie Meleisea and current WBA World title
mandatory challenger Che Kenneally.
Hemingway made waves into the scene in July 2021 when she
defeated Alrie Meleisea on her debut. She won her New Zealand
title in August 2023 when she defeated Maria Hunt for the vacant
New Zealand (Pro Box NZ version) Heavyweight title. In her
career, her ranking has peaked at 3rd in the WBA world
heavyweight rankings, putting her fingertips to a world title
shot.
This creates a difficult challenge for both boxers as they both
have advantages against the other. Tinta Smith is a two-division
New Zealand national amateur champion, giving Smith the
technical boxing skill edge, especially with her speed.
Hemingway is heavier, taller, stronger and has a longer reach.
Hemingway has used this advantage in the past with other boxers,
however, the boxers who have a big amateur boxing background
have been able to gain a victory over her. Smith having an
amateur boxing background could show the results go her way.
Tinta Smith vs Sequita Hemingway for the inaugural New Zealand (PBCNZ
version) cruiserweight title will happen on May 11th at Te Rapa
Racecourse Hamilton. Tickets will be on sale at https://www.nabbysboxinggym.com/.
The event will showcase some of Waikatos best amateur boxers, as
they prepare themselves for the North Island Golden Gloves that
is happening in Tauranga in June.
