PORTLAND, Ore. (July 30, 2013) - On behalf of elite female amateur boxers, Women Boxing Archive Network (WBAN) has begun a petition addressed to the International Olympic Committee to increase opportunities and prevent discrimination against female boxers, as well as other women athletes.

Press Release:  WBAN Petitions to increase weight classes in 2016 Olympics in Rio

WBAN is sending out a press release in regards to a WBAN Petition that we have started on behalf of the elite female athletics (amateur boxers), to get reconsideration by the I.O.C. to increase the weight classes in the Olympics for female amateur boxers.  At this time as it appears that it will stand for the next Olympics, there are only three weight divisions for females, and ten weight divisions for males.  We would like to advocate increasing weight divisions for females. The stats:  36 female boxers  - 250 male boxers for the Olympics.  Weight divisions:  Women:  three weight classes, flyweight, lightweight, and middleweight.   Men: Ten weight divisions:  light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight light welterweight, welterweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight, and super heavyweight. Garbatt and Trivilino Battle to a Draw

(JULY 27)  Last night (June 26) at the Saratoga City Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, “Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt, 125, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, battled fan-favorite, Jackie “The Force” Trivilino, 126, Plattsburgh, NY, over eight hotly contested rounds at Ares Promotions Fight Night XI. Dispensing with her usual swarming style, Trivilino opened the show boxing from long range keeping her physically stronger opponent at a comfortable distance while initiating the exchanges by firing off punches in volume. Trivilino was successful with this tactic in the first stanza while Garbatt mostly concentrated on keeping her defense tight while finding her timing after nearly a year hiatus from the ring. Inaugural Canadian Golden Gloves Championship A National Success

(JULY 26)  From July 17th - 20th, Boxing Canada held its inaugural Golden Gloves championship tournament at the NAV Centre in Cornwall, Ontario. This tournament featured some of the top amateur boxing talent from across the country and was a warm up for the Canadian National Amateur Championships which take place in mid October in Regina, Saskatchewan. In addition, the tournament got special recognition and shout outs from former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis and the new federal opposition leader of Canada Justin Trudeau...Full Story

(JULY 24) Last night at the Tokyo Big Sight, Tokyo, Japan, Anabel Ortiz, 27 years old, now 12-3-0 (2KO), of Tepic, Mexico, won a 10-round split decision over previously undefeated Etsuko Tada, 32 years old, now 12-1-2 (2KO), of Kyoto, Japan.  Tada was defending her WBA [105 lb.] strawweight belt.   In a second, female bout, Bantamweight Marina Isami won her first pro bout, when she defeated pro debuter Chisa Tanaka.  Isami won by a four-round unanimous decision.  Full Story

The African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard began as part of a promise to a little boy, and in 1998 the Shearer Cottage was dedicated as the first site on the Trail. The ambition was to reach a total of eight sites. That there were many stories was obvious, but the depth and range of the experiences that make up the tapestry of the African American experience on Martha’s Vineyard was amazing. (JULY 23) Last night at Korakuen Hall, in Tokyo, Japan, 35-year old Naomi Yamaguchi, of Tokyo,  faced 31-year old Chuthaporn Pradissan, of Bangkok, Thailand, in an super flyweight eight rounder non-title bout.  Yamaguchi was originally tentatively fighting Daniela Bermudez,  but according to our sources,  the contracts for a unification title failed in the negotiations.  In Yamaguchi's fight with Pradissan, Yamaguchi won by a first round [1:56] KO..Full Story

Bopp Wins by Decision in Argentina

(JULY 20) Last night at the Racing Club, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Yesica Bopp, now 25-1-0 (11KO), of Buenos Aires, Argentina,  successfully defended her two flyweight (WBO and WBA) world titles when she defeated Anastasia Toktaulova, now 14-12-0 (2KO),  of Leesburg, Florida, by a 10-round unanimous decision.
