Hungary Head Medal Table in European Union Championships with Katie Taylor Awarded Boxer of the Tournament.
by Michael O'Neill
July 18, 2013

(JULY 18) Home Nation Boxers took pride of place as the 7th Edition of the European Union Championships came to a close in Keszthely, on the shores of Hungary’s Lake Balaton at the weekend.

This year, for the first time, the Women’s Elite, Youth and Junior Championships were held at the same time at the Hotel Helikon Conference Centre.

The Hungarian hosts, took some 19 medals in all among the three categories with 6 Gold, 2 silver and 11 bronze remaining ‘at home’ . A strong French squad ended with 5 Gold, 5 Bronze and 2 Bronze whilst Team Ireland finished in third position with 5 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze.

In the Senior Championships, England bagged 3 Gold and 1 Bronze, among them Olympic Gold Medallist Nicola Adams and World Champion, Savannah Marshall. The Hungarians had a successful week here too with (2 gold and 1 bronze), while Italy went home with (2 Gold) thus ending the tournament in 3rd position among the Seniors .Gold too for Lisa Whiteside at 54 kg. Adams defeated Bulgaria’s Stoyka Petrova.

Youth: Hungary ‘ruled the roost’ also in the medal standing of this category (4 Gold and 1 Bronze). Poland got the second place (2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) while the third one was taken by Ireland (1 Gold, 1 Silver, 4 Bronze).

Junior: The French Junior Team finished strongly once again, this time thanks to 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze whilst the Turkish team returned to Ankara with (3 Gold, 1 Silver an 3 Bronze). The Irish contingent were more than delighted with their 3 Gold and 2 Silvers).

Not for the first time, and probably not for the last time, the Boxer of the Tournament trophy went to Ireland’s 26 years old, Katie Taylor who struck Gold for a record fifth time, her first E.U title being in Liverpool in 2008.

Taylor secured her 15th straight title following a unanimous decision over Estelle Mossely of France in the lightweight class. The victory was Taylor’s 54th straight championship win and the 138th victory of her career in 144 outings – a 95% success rate – and her fifth successive EU 60kg gold.

The current AIBA World Female boxer of the year, has now won one Olympic, four World, five European and five EU titles – all in-a-row - since 2005.

Speaking after the presentation, Taylor said : “I’m delighted with the win. It’s been a tough week here in Keszthely but it’s great to be back in a tournament for the first time since the Olympic Games, she said.

“It’s fantastic to be part of such a successful team. The Youths and Juniors were just brilliant and I’m just proud to be part of this incredible team,” said the AIBA Ambassador for women’s boxing.

“It’s unbelievable to come away with so many medals from this tournament. The future of Irish women’s boxing is bright with all these young girls coming through.

“They represented their country with pride and they gave it absolutely everything to get amongst the medals. It’s been a great week, but it was tough. The heat inside the venue was unbelievable at times as there was no air conditioning.”
