(JULY 14) World Boxing Federation
Womens World Middleweight Champion Christina Hammer retained her
crown on Saturday night, July 13, at the Energie Verbund-Arena
in Dresden, Germany when she unanimously outpointed tough
Swedish challenger Mikaela Lauren.
Promoted by Sport Events Steinforth, this was the sixth
successful defense for the undefeated 22-year-old
Dortmund-resident Hammer, since she won the WBF title in
February 2011.
In Lauren, Hammer was up against a skilled and persistent
challenger, but while it was a tough battle between two world
class boxers it was clear that Hammer was the better fighter in
almost every round.
Lauren tried everything she could to get the upper hand, but
Hammer was effective with hard counter combinations and rarely
let the Swede get the better of the exchanges.
After ten entertaining rounds of boxing, judges Frank Michael
Maass, Terry O'Connor and Alejandro Lopez scored the bout
100-90, 99-91 and 98-92 in favor of the defending champion, who
improved her spotless record to 15-0 (7).
Mikaela Lauren (37) travels back to Stockholm with only her
third loss in twenty-two fights (19-3, 7 KOs), and can be happy
that she put up a respectable performance against the number-one
middleweight in the world.
Also on Saturday night, but thousands of miles away across the
Atlantic, at the Madison Civic Center in Madison, West Virginia,
USA the WBF North American Cruiserweight title remained vacant
when co-challengers Bobby Thomas Jr. and Warren Browning fought
to a draw.
This was a rematch of their January bout which Thomas (12-1-1, 9
KOs) won after two rounds when Browning (17-3-2, 12 KOs) retired
on his stool due to an arm injury.
This time the fight went all ten rounds, and both boxers gave
everything they had to win, only to see the judges at ringside
unable to separate them when the decision was announced.
A third fight could be in the making, as the spectators
definitely got their money’s worth. Special guest in attendance
was former undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the world James
“Buster” Douglas.
Promoters were Chase Hill of Black Eye Promotions, in
association with Jerry Thomas.
