The Good, the Bad and the Ugly This Weekend in Women's Boxing!

(JULY 29) It was the Good, the Bad and the Ugly this weekend in women's boxing----I am not talking about the Italian spaghetti Western film that came out in 1966.   Let's start this out on a positive Note....A couple of the top cards this weekend that took place.

On Saturday night,  at the Little Caesars Arena, in Detroit, Michigan, one of the top fights on this card was with  Claressa "T-Rex" Shields, 174 3/4, of Flint, Michigan, who fought for the first time as a heavyweight.  She displayed much more power as a heavyweight in this weight class. Shields stopped her opponent Vanessa LePage-Joanisse, in the second round by TKO,  knocking Vanessa down three times in that round before the ref stopped the fight.  Shields won the WBC, WBF heavyweight titles, and the vacant WBO light heavyweight title.

Another great night of women's boxing took place at the County Coliseum, in El Paso, Texas.  In the mainliner, Stephanie Han won by an eight-round unanimous decision over Miranda Reyes. The two were fighting for the WBA Internationall title. There was also a noted fight for women's boxing on this card that featured Yadira Bustillos winning an eight-round unanimous decision over Amy Salinas. [For all the fights that took place this weekend and in the month of July, go here]

These two boxing cards are  examples of this weekend that serve as a reminder that women's boxing is not only alive and well but thriving. The skill, tenacity, and dedication displayed by these athletes are paving the way for more recognition and opportunities for female boxers.

Now for the Bad/Ugly....The top pick for this weekend ...goes to a fight that took place on Saturday night, July 27th...

[By the way this is not the boxers issue----it is their promoter, matchmaker, manager, etc., who are encouraging these matchups in the first place...they either have so little confidence in there fighter---or just want to build a boxing record of "sure wins" against inferior/journeyman-women opponents.]

So without further ado....

Pro debuter vs. female boxer with 111 losses on her boxing record---Julia Lee vs. Klaudia Bajnok Ferenczi. Lee won the fight with a stoppage of the fight in the third round.  Klaudia sustained a nasty cut over her eye, from a possible head butt.

Klaudia has not had a win on her record since 2019, suffering 40 losses and two draws since that time.  WBAN viewed a little bit of the footage that was available on the internet--Go Here

Lorne Castle said to WBAN, "Where did it all change from matching one novice with another novice?"  What learning can possibly be gained from beating someone who has not won for 5 years and 40 fights - hell she lost only 3 weeks ago."

On that same boxing card it should be noted that there were two other questionable matchups on the card that included Jack Blencowe, 2-0-0 vs. Victor Edagha, 4-94-3, and Harvey Dykes, 3-0-0 vs. Ryan Labourne, 0-17-2.  To see All the Crazy Matchmaking on our database, go Here.

Folks--- boxing community, promoters, managers, fighters and all---we are BETTER than this.  Is it not time to prioritize the welfare and progress of the fighters over short-term gains and spectacle, and strive for fair and meaningful matchups that promote skill development and growth.

We need to create an environment where fighters can learn and improve, rather than being used as mere stepping stones for others.
