How is the Super Middleweight Division in Women's Boxing?

(JULY 13) In my first article,  I analyzed the heavyweight division of the professional women's boxing in the sport today. Next, let's shift our focus to the super middleweight division in women's boxing. I'll be taking a closer look at the talented group of professional female boxers competing in this weight class. I gathered information from various sources, including the extensive coverage of this division by WBAN over the years. Here are the top ten, a very lean list of females in this weight-class.

#1 - Franchon Crews-Dezurn:  Boxing record: 9-2-0 (2KO)
overview summary:  She has been fighting since November 19, 2016, when she made her pro debut, with Claressa Shields, who was making her pro debut.  She fought three fights that were either four or six rounds, and then on 9-13-2018, she fought Maricela Corjejo for the vacant WBC World Super Middleweight title, winning by a majority decision.  Followed up after that title shot, she fought a 0-2-1 boxer, Kayla Williams in a scheduled ten-rounder, stopping Williams in the fifth round.  She then had a rematch with Cornejo, then Alejandra Jimenez that ultimately changed to a no contest, and having three more fights with Elin Cederroos, 8-0-0 going into the fight losing to Franchon by a ten-round unanimous decision and Franchon earning the IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO belts.  She then fought Savannah Marshall and lost by decision, and belts IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO World Super Middleweight titles.  She has not fought since  December 15, 2023.

#2 – Shadasia Green:  Boxing Record – 13-1-0 (11 KO)
Overview summary: Her last fight was against Franchon Crews Dezurn losing the bout by a ten-round unanimous decision.  She began boxing professionally since January 26, 2019.  She has fought and defeated the following - Elin Cederroos, 8-1-0; Ogleidis Suarez, 30-4-1; Celia Rosa Sierra, 8-4-0; Angelica Lopez Flores, 13-0-0;  Angie Barcas, 2-14-0, Silvia Zuniga, 7-21-0, Martha Patricia Lara Gaytan, 11-8-0; Maricela Garcia Mendoza, 2-1-0; Silvia Jimenez, 5-3-0; Irais Hernandez, 2-3-2, Jessica Roberson, debut, and Briana Kirkwood, debut.

#3 – Citlalli Ortiz:   Boxing Record – 4-1-0 (1KO)
Overview summary:  She last fought July 15, 2023 not having a fight for a year.  Her opponents were the following:  Jordanne Garcia, 4-2-3, win against Garcia; Diana Tapia Castro, 3-1-0, loss;  Diana Tapia Castro, 3-0-0 win by maj. decision; Vanessa Roriguez Ochoa, 0-1-0, Win over Ochoa, and Citalali Garcia Cervantes, debut - won by a TKO over Cervantes.

#4 – Mary Casamassa – Boxing Record 5-0-0 (1KO)
Overview summary: Mary fought one time so far in 2024, where she fought tough veteran Olivia Gerula in a ten-rounder for the WIBA World super Middleweight title.  She had two fights in 2023, where she fough Jozette Cotton, with a 0-2-1 fight going into the fight, and Christianne Fahey, with a 2-0-0 record, winning both fights.  She then had two fights in 2022, where she fought LeAnn O'Malley, 1-2-0, and Jozette Cotton, 0-1-1, winning one by unanimous decision and the other by TKO. 

#5 Nisa Rodriguez -  Boxing record: 2-0-0 (0KO)
Overview summary: Nisa has had two fights in 2024, where she fought Jordanne Garcia, 4-3-3, and Jozette Cotton, 0-3-1, winning both fights by unanimous decisions.

#6 Kaitlin LaVigne -  Boxing record: 3-3-1 (0KO)
Overview summary: Kaitlin fought two times in 2024, losing by a unanimous decision to Elia Carranza, 7-1-0, and winning by a split decision against Pasene Auega, 2-1-0.  In 2023, she fought twice, having a majority draw with Jordanne Garcia, and winning by TKO over pro debut over Jina Bynum.  In 2022, she had one fight, losing to Olivia Curry by a unanimous decision.  In 2021, she fought twice, winning a split decision over Melody Popravak, 1-0-0, and losing her pro debut against Miranda Barber, 0-1-0.

#7 Pasene Asuega -  Boxing record: 2-2-0 (1KO)
Overview summary: Pasene fought once in 2024, losing to Kaitlin LaVigne by a four-round split decision.  She then fought once in 2023, winning by a TKO over Jina Bynum, 0-1-0.  She fought once in 2022, losing to Elia Carranza, who was making her pro debut.  In 2021, making her pro debut, she won by a majority decision over Miranda Barber, 2-3-0.

#8 Brook Eaton -  Boxing record: 1-0-0 (0KO)
Overview summary: Brook had only one fight but appears as #7 on the net.  She fought a four rounder against Ester Konecna, 3-22-2. (Can't make this stuff up folks.).

#9 Olivia Gerula -  Boxing record: 19-21-3 (3KO)
Overview summary: She has fought everyone and has been a pro for 26 plus years.  Formal world champion and more fighting many of the best that includes Jaime Clampitt, Melissa St. Vil, Jennifer Han, Amanda Serrano, Brooke Dierdorff, Myriam Chomaz, Jelena Mrdjenovich and the list goes on. 

#10 Wendy Gcado -  Boxing record: 3-1-1 (0KO)
Overview summary: Wendy fought one time in 2024 thus far, losing to Nobengazi Booth, 1-1-0 by a four-round majority decision.  She fought twice in 2023, with one draw against Caroline Rabali, debut, and one majority decision agaisnt Emily Kabwalo, 2-7-0.  In 2022 she had two fights, twice against Noxolo Mkhasibe, 1-1-0, winning by a split decision and a fight by points.

Our next weight class I will be looking at is the middleweight division.
