(MAY 1) Last night at the Madison Square Garden, in New York,
women’s boxing made yet another “footprint” in the sport for now
seeing that women’s boxing should have been in the “mainstream”
Long ago!
In a history-first a female
multi-world champion bout was featured in the main event, with a
sold out crowd of well over 19,000 boxing fans.
The top champions, Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano did not
disappoint! Taylor, 134½, of Bray, Ireland,
ultimately won a controversial split decision over Serrano,
133½, of Brooklyn, New York, with final scoring of 96-94
(Serrano); 97-93 (Taylor), and 96-94 (Taylor), with Taylor
retaining her WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA Lightweight titles.
Ed Mulholland, the Matchroom
Boxing Photographer, said on Facebook, "Last night rank’s among
the best events I’ve ever covered. The atmosphere and crowd were
electric and I actually had trouble staying calm at ringside
which at this point in my career never happens. It was a
bigger event than I even imagined, billed as the greatest
women’s fight ever, it lived up to the hype as both women fought
remarkably and both should walk away proud. "
Amanda Serrano remains a world
champion in the featherweight division, as she moved up in
weight class to fight Taylor. WBAN scored the fight 96-94
for Serrano. Scoreboard that was televised on the screen
at the Madison Square Garden/by Chris Mannix, but the judges saw
it differently. Taylor remains undefeated with a 21-0-0
(6KO), and Serrano is 42-2-1 (30KO).
In a second female bout, was a
ten-round multi-title unification competition in the battle of
the super middleweights. Franchon Crews-Dezurn, 166¾, of
Baltimore, Maryland, proved to be too much for her undefeated
opponent, Elin Cederroos, 167¾, of Vasteraas, Sweden, winning by
a unanimous decision for the WBC, WBA, IBF, and the WBO world
titles. Crews-Dezurn is now 8-1-0 (2KO), and Cederroos is 8-4-0
(4KO).
