Women's Boxing Action in Europe
By Torben L.
February 28, 2008

There are some nice treats in store for fans of women's boxing in Europe, who are able to receive German TV. No less than 3 world championship fights will be shown live over the next two weekends.

First up is Susianna Kentikian (19-0-0) against Sarah Goodson (25-15-1) with two titles at stake. The fight will take place at the Alderdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg on Friday 29th February. This will be Kentikians first double title defence. She won the WBA Flyweight Title against Carolina Alvarez title just over a year ago, while the WIBF belt was added to the collection on 7th December last year, after she a hard fought bout with Nadia Hokmi.

This will be the Sarah Goodsons first fight outside the US and only her second title fight. But with the solid experience of 41 previous encounters in the ring, that should hardly worry Goodson too much. Kentikian has really made a name for herself on the German boxing scene, and earlier this month she also received recognition outside the boxing circles, when she was elected Hamburg's Sportswoman of the Year.  The Kentikian vs Goodson fight will be shown live on ProSieben Fight Night, Friday 29th February. The broadcast begins at 10.15 pm CET.

Saturday 8th March is another date to keep in mind. ZDF shows two women's world championship fight live from König Palast, Krefeld. Ina Menzer 19-0-0 will be defending her WIBF Featherweight belt against Canadian Sandy Tsagouris (7-0-0). Tsagouris holds the Canadian Featherweight Title which she won by defeating Olivia Gerula on points in October last year. Her fight in Krefeld will be her first world title fight. Ina Menzer comes off a win against veteran Laura Serrano. The two produced an exiting and close fight in November of 2007.

The other world championship fight of the night is for the WIBF and GBU Super Flyweight titles. Title holder Alesia Graf (19-1-0) will be facing Fatuma Zarika (17-3-1) of Kenya. Alesia Grafs last two fights were both close, action packed and very enjoyable to watch. The opponents were Zulina Munoz in September and Esmeralda Moreno in November, and both made Graf work very hard for her purse.

Zarika has fought in Germany once before. She met Ina Menzer in Munich on 27th May 2006, where she suffered one of her 3 defeats. However, she proved a difficult and uncomfortable opponent for Menzer, and could well prove to be the same for Graf. ZDF begins their live broadcast of the Menzer vs Tsagouris and Graf vs Zarika fights at 11 pm CET on 8th March.
