Panamanian junior featherweight Shantal “La Fiera” Martínez Rodriguez was born on December 28, 1990 in David, Panama. She trains at the Pedro “Rockero” Alcázar gym, located in Curundú, Panama City.  (She is also known as Chantal, Shantel or Chantall Martinez in media reports).

Martinez began boxing at age 10 and entered her pro boxing career at age 15 on July 15, 2006 at the Gimnasio Municipal in Anton, Panama, where she lost a three-round unanimous decision to undefeated Carolina Alvarez of Venezuela. Alvarez improved her record to 5-0-1 (2 KO's) with the win.

In a return bout with Carolina Alvarez (110½ lbs) on December 29, 2006 at  Gimnasio Municipal in Anton, Panama, Shantal (109 lbs) who had just turned 16, was knocked out at 1:28 in the first round while Alvarez progressed to 8-0-1 (4 KO's).
