Smashin Smo (Sandra) Ortiz was born June 21,1975 in Topeka, Kansas. In the past years, Smo cheered co-ed at the University of Kansas then danced for an Arena Football team. She competed in a Fitness Contest, a Power lifting Contest, and a Sport aerobic contest. She's worked as an Aerobic Instructor, Certified Personal Trainer, Gymnastics Coach, High School Cheerleading Coach and a Dance Sponsor.

In the summer of 2004, she needed a new challenge---Professional Boxing.

Both Smo and Katie Shadwell had their pro debut on September 11, 2004,  at the Kansas Expocenter in Topeka, Kansas. The first round could of went either way. Shadwell throwing lots of straight punches while Smo landed clean hard shots. The fight ended at 1:38 in the
second round by TKO for Smo.
 

On January 21, 2005 at the Kansas Expocenter in Topeka, Kansas Smo (105) controlled the fight with power and speed to overwhelm Hollenbeck(109) in :25 seconds of the second round.

Brenda Ledford made her pro-debut against Smo (103) on May 7, 2005 at the Kansas Expocenter. Overnight, Ledford had to lose five pounds and Smo had to gain 10 pounds for this fight to happen. The next day Ledford (118) lost by TKO in 2:00 of the third round.

Boxing was just a past time until Smo (3-0) had the opportunity to fight Stephanie Dobbs (15-17-2) at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On May 19, 2005, Smo (101) lost a very close decision to the busier Dobbs (104). Judge: Bill Marshall 47-48 Judge: Gerald
Ritter 47-48 Judge: David Sutherland 45-50.

On July 11, 2005, Smo had a four-round draw against Dawn Ramey (112) at Whiskey Tango's in Grain valley, Missouri.

On September 10, 2005, Jennifer Tizisiky (102) made her pro debut against Smo (101) at Terrible's Casino in St. Joseph Missouri. Smo won by TKO in the :47 seconds of the round two. Smo moved to 4-1-1.

On November 2, 2005 as the crowd booed, Smo (105) lost by split decision to Ramey (110). Judges scores Brett Miller 37-38 Judge: Fred Fensom 40-37 Judge: Jerry Griffin 37-38.  "By the video tape and the photos, I agree with crowd not the judges," responded Smo. "I'll get her next time."

With a week a notice, on November 19, 2005, Smo (102) lost by her first stoppage to Carina Moreno (105) at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, California. Moreno (7-0) was ranked #1 Flyweight at the time.

February 2, 2006 at Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, Missouri, Smo moved her record to 5-3-1. According to Kansas City Boxing News.com, "This fight can be summed up pretty easy. Hill (104) was thin and lacked power and Ortiz (104) was able to take whatever punches and continue to push forward. A bloody nose for Hill was visible result of the punishment Ortiz was able to unleash. " All three judges Fred Fensom Jerry Griffin and Brett Miller scored 40-36.

March 4, 2006 at the Kansas Expocenter in Topeka, Kansas, Smo (103) won a five round unanimous decision against Savannah Hill (101) who wanted a rematch. Smo moved to 6-3-1.


Weigh-in:  Goodson vs. Ortiz

On April 5, 2006, at the Ameristar Casino, in Kansas City, Missouri,
Sandra Ortiz, 104, of Topeka, Kansas,  won by a six-round majority decision over Sarah "The Thrilla from Manila" Goodson, 105. One judge called the fight a draw, and the two others, had it for Ortiz.  Final judges scores, 57-57, and 59-56, and 59-56.

On July 2, 2007, in Temecula, California, Melissa Shaffer, 100,  won a six-round unanimous decision over Ortiz, 99½ lbs.
