5'5" bantamweight Mayerlin "La Monita" Rivas was born on December 5, 1987 in Maracaibo, Zulia, Venezuela. She was a highly competitive athlete and was twice national champion in wushu. She is managed and trained by Orangel "Memin" Ramos.

She made her pro debut on October 8, 2007 at Teatro Roxi in Maracaibo, with a third-round TKO of Anys Cedillo (118 lbs) of Caracas, Venezuela, who fell to 0-4.

On June 20, 2008 at Centro Recreacional Las Vegas in Barranquilla, Colombia, Mayerlin (122 lbs) TKO'd pro debuter Diana Garcia (123 lbs) of Colombia at 0:38 in the second round of a scheduled four-rounder.

On August 23, 2008 at Centro Bético Croes in Santa Cruz, Aruba, Mayerlin (121 lbs) won a six-round unanimous decision over Anys Cedillo (120 lbs) who fell to 1-5 with the loss.

On February 12, 2009 at Coliseo Gaira in Santa Marta, Colombia, Mayerlin (122 lbs) knocked out pro debuter Alejandra Ariza (121½ lbs) of Santa Marta at 2:29 in the first round of a scheduled six-rounder.  Ariza has not fought again.

On April 17, 2009 at Centro Recreacional Las Vegas in Barranquilla, Colombia, Mayerlin (119 lbs) TKO'd Stefany Cassiani (120¼ lbs) of Barranquilla at 2:25 in the second round of a scheduled six-rounder. Cassiani fell to 1-3 (0 KO's).

On November 14, 2009 at the Convention Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Sandy Tsagouris (124 lbs) of Brampton, Ontario won a six-round unanimous (60-55, 60-54 and 60-53) decision over Mayerlin Rivas (125¾ lbs) of in a six-round contest.  Tsagouris improved to 10-1 (4 KO's) while Rivas fell to 5-1 (4 KO's).

On April 30, 2010 at Coliseo Gaira in Santa Marta, Colombia, Mayerlin Rivas (122 lbs) TKO'd Alejandra Ramirez (123 lbs) at 1:01 in the fourth round of a scheduled six-rounder.  Ramirez fell to 0-7 with this loss.

On July 9, 2010 at the Gran Forúm in Mexico City, Zulina Muñoz (117 lbs) of Mexico City controversially retained the WBC Youth Bantamweight title with a majority (93-93-93-93,92-93) draw against Mayerlin Rivas (116¾ lbs).  Rivas sent Muñoz to the canvas in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds. The knockdown in the fifth came more from a push than a punch, but in the sixth Muñoz was dropped by a clean one-two combination. However, Rivas faded in the last three rounds of the clinch-filled fight while Munoz piled on the pressure and squared the scorecards with help from a point that was deducted from Rivas in the ninth round.

Both boxers had kept the referee busy throughout a fight that at times resembled a stand-up wrestling match more than sweet science as Munoz repeatedly charged into Rivas with her head down to get to close quarters. The close result sparked controversy and Rivas' manager Orangel "Memin" Ramos asked WBC for an immediate rematch between the two boxers.

On January 19, 2011 at Coliseo Kid Dumlop in Santa Marta, Colombia, Mayerlin (118 lbs) KO'd Francia Perez (117 lbs) of Colombia at 0:31 in the sixth round of a scheduled eight-rounder. Perez fell to 0-4.

On September 23, 2017, at the Centro Comercial El Tesoro, in Medellin, Colombia,  Rivas, 122, won by a first round KO over Maria Miranda, 121. The bout was scheduled for eight rounds.

On November 1, 2017, at the  La Macarena, in Medellin, Colombia,  Rivas, 117, had a majority draw with Dayana Cordero, 114¾.  The two were fighting for the WBA bantamweight title.

Final judges scores were 58-56½, 58-56, and 59½-56.

On February 7, 2020, at the Arena Roberto Duran, in Panama City, Panama,  Rivas, 121 3/4, of Maracaibo, Venezuela, won a ten-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated boxer,  Laura Ledezma, 120.5 of Panama City.  The two were fighting for the vacant  WBA Super Bantamweight title.  Final judges scores were 98-92, 94-96, and 93-96.   Ledezma is now 14-1-0 (7KO), and Rivas is 16-4-2 (10KO).
