ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH
JAMIE  "ROCKY" JOHNSON

Conducted by Sue TL Fox
March 15, 2002

Jamie Johnson lives in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. She fought in the HISTORY - FIRST all female boxing card in the UK that took place February 19, 1994.  Johnson (who's name was misprinted on the program fought Dawn Davis.)
Full Historical Article of first all - female card that took place in 1994 in the UK.

Jamie first heard about women’s boxing on the radio. She started training three times a week in London. Jamie told WBAN, "I was terribly unfit due to a bad past! (drinking and smoking) so you can well imagine my surprise when our female trainer asked me if I would like a fight! I had only been training about 2 months! Of course we all said yes. Two weeks later we all met at the pub we were boxing in. Three Germans, and 3 of us. We were given a choice. There was a small opponent, a medium opponent and a giant opponent--- Guess who I got?….Yes, the giant! She was 6’3", I was 5’2", with a substantial weight difference. I lost on points and it was a terrible mismatch as you can imagine!"

Jamie Johnson was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch for the 2012 London Olympics... I was chosen for being one of the British Pioneers of Women's Boxing..

TL Fox: When did you begin boxing? Did you fight amateur fights, exhibition fights, and/or sanctioned fights?

Jamie: I began boxing about 16 years ago. The boxing matches I participated in were not registered with any board, so I will describe them as semi-pro.

TL Fox: How many fights did you have?

Jamie: I had about 16 fights.

TL Fox: Did you fight mostly in the UK, or other areas?

Jamie: I fought mainly in the UK --above and below pubs!

TL Fox: Did you know Sue Atkins, and if so, when did you meet her?

Jamie: I met Sue sixteen years ago! Through Sue and her colleagues some of my fights were arranged.

TL Fox: Did you ever spar or fight Sue Atkins?

Jamie: I sparred with Sue all the time, and fought her once.

TL Fox: What weight class did you fight most of the time?

Jamie: My weight when I started was about 8 stone 10lb, now it is 10 stone 8lb!

TL Fox: What got you interested in boxing?

Jamie: I have loved boxing since I watched the ROCKY films! That’s why my nickname is Rocky!

TL Fox: I understand that you fought some very top-notch women boxers, that included Deirdre Gogarty and Jane Couch, can you tell boxing fans details about those fights?

Jamie: I fought Deirdre Gogarty twice. It was very apparent from the start that Deirdre was highly experienced and knew exactly what she was doing. Knowing what I know about boxing now, I would never have allowed a match between her and myself to go ahead. I was too unfit and inexperienced to fight a girl like Deirdre in those days. Of course now it would be completely different!! My fight with Jane couch was nothing special. Jane and I used to spar together all the time, so we were used to each other. I was not meant to be fighting on the show because I had an ankle injury. Jane’s opponent dropped out at the last minute, so to help her out, I stepped in! Luckily for her my ankle gave way in the 3rd round! The fight had to be stopped because of my ankle.

TL Fox: Would you like to tell boxing fans anything that I have not asked you?

Jamie: If anybody is interested in getting into boxing, I would definitely suggest that they do not box until they are 100% fit. My problem was I had 90% heart and 10% fitness. I would normally last the whole fight, providing good entertainment for the audience---obviously it would not have helped me. I would not like anybody else too have to learn like I did.

A special thanks to Jamie Johnson who took the time to be interviewed by WBAN!
