Irma Garcia

Mexican junior flyweight Jazmin "Dinamita" Ortega  fights out of Mexico City.  She began boxing as an amateur and had about 100 fights before turning professional according to promoter Hector Sanchez.

She made her professional debut on April 13, 2013 at Monumental Plaza de Toros in Ciudad Hidalgo, Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico in 1982, dropping a four-round unanimous decision to the undefeated Alondra Garcia. Garcia, who improved her pro record to 7-0 with the win over Ortega, was a tough choice for a pro debut - just seven months later she fought Naoko Shibata in Japan for the vacant IBF world junior flyweight title.

Ortega's second pro bout, at the Auditorio General Arteaga in Queretaro, Mexico was more evenly matched for profesiional experience. She weighed in at 108 lbs and fought to a 37-79, 39-37, 38-38 split draw over four rounds with Yadira Morales (103½ lbs), who was making her own professional debut.

On September 6 2013 at Arena Jalisco in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Jazmin Ortega lost to Isabel Millán of Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico by a six-round unanimous decision.  Millán improved her record to 7-1-1 (5 KO's) with the win.

Jazmin Ortega notched her first pro win on February 8 2014 when she won by a TKO over previously undefeated Lourdes "Pequeña Lulú" Juarez after knocking her down twice.  Juarez, of Distrito Federal, Mexico is the sister of Mexican boxing superstar Mariana Juarez and had made her own pro debut in October 2013. Juarez fell to 3-1-0 (1 KO) with the loss.

The TKO win over Juarez led to plenty of buzz about Ortega's punching power but she was still a clear underdog when she took on multiple former world champion Irma "Guerita" Sánchez of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in her next bout.  Sánchez had held the WBC, WBC Youth, IBF, NABF and World Boxing Federation titles at Junior Bantamweight and Flyweight.

Ortega vs Sanchez on March 15 2014

On March 15, 2014 at the baseball stadium in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico, in a bout broadcast live on Televisa Deportes throughout the country, Jazmin Ortega battled to a hard fought ten-round unanimous decision over Irma Sánchez, who fell to 28-7-1 (8 KO's) with the loss. Ortega showed no fear as she kept steady pressure on Sanchez in toe to toe action for ten exciting rounds (see the two highlight videos below).

Far from being intimidated by Sánchez's past world title record, Ortega had embraced the opportunity to fight her, telling sports magazine Esto: "As a boxer you always dream of your face appearing on large billboards ... that time has come and I will not fail, the "Guerita" has the experience, but I have the conditions to take the win and repeat the knockout" (referring to her win over Lourdes Jaurez).

WBAN named Jazmin Ortega its Fighter of the Month for April 2014 for her hard-fought win over Irma Sanchez.
