19-year-old welterweight Olivia
Fonseca, who is of Puerto Rican-Colombian descent, is a certifiable beauty.
The beautician/bartender’s main thing is boxing, but because of her looks
she's going to be a crossover star. Fonseca, who also holds a trainer's
license - says she has been enthralled by boxing since she was 11.
“My sister [Christina, now 23] started boxing and my dad [Edward] made her
bring me to the Jack Costello Boxing Club with her," Fonseca said. "That's
how I started.” The funny thing, though, is that Christina only boxed for 5
months or so. She was a teenager. She got her driver's license and had a
boyfriend. She got a job. You know how it goes. But I was a kid, a tomboy. I
fell in love with the sport and stuck with it.
Olivia’s Trainer Mike recalled one day that a little girl came into the gym
while he was padding in the ring. Another trainer asked him to work with her
a little. His first thought was that she would quit after a few weeks, but
he would work with her. After mitting her the first time, he realized that
“She could punch.” Seventeen amateur boxing matches and four national titles
later Olivia decided to turn pro. Mike said that he thinks that more girls
will get involved with boxing when there is a female Olympic division.
“Females have to be dead serious in order to prove themselves and be willing
to go the extra mile.” Mike expressed that it was hard to find boxing for
girls. He recommends 10 amateur matches then turn pro for females. Fonseca
said that she hopes more girls get involved at a young age. She said that
they should expect to be dedicated and put in a lot of hard work.
Olivia’s inspiration and manager is her sister Christina. She is fighting
out of Philadelphia, PA. Olivia will be fighting her 2nd pro bout on June
15, 2007 at Delaware State Fairgrounds Ice Arena in Harrington, DE. |
