5'0" junior flyweight Anabel "Avispa" Ortiz lives in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, where she was born on July 5, 1986.  She played soccer and practiced karate for five years, but she has been dedicated to pugilism from the age of 11, when she says "I saw a gym in Naucalpan; I liked boxing very much and I got to train.  It was love at first sight."  She is reputed to have had 120 amateur fights in seven and a half years, losing only three, so her home is full of trophies.  Her brother Victor was also a boxer.

Anabel made her pro debut on January 12 2007 at te Plaza de la Unidad del PRI in Toluca, México. She weighed in at 104¾ lbs and defeated fellow debuter Cristina Aguilar (106 lbs) by a four-round unanimous decision. Aguilar has not fought since.

On February 10, 2007 at Arena-Casino Los Fresnos in Tepic, Mexico, she defeated debut fighter  La Traviesa Avalos from Guadalajara by a fourth round KO in a scheduled six-rounder. Avalos has not fought since.

On March 30, 2007 at Arena-Casino Los Fresnos, Tepic, Mexico Anabel Ortiz won the Mexican Junior Flyweight title with a ten-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Delia "Japonesa" Lopez.  Lopez began the fight aggressively looking for the KO, but Ortiz used her jab and uppercut well. In the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds Lopez attempted to work Ortiz into the ropes but Ortiz used her boxing skills to maintain a good distance and to punish Lopez.  In the seventh Lopez began to look more desperate as Ortiz continued to score with her jab and uppercut. In the ninth, referee  Juan Rodriguez Orozco deducted a point from Lopez for repeated rabbit punching. The tenth round was a formality for the new national champion. Lopez fell to 8-1-2 (4 KO's) with the loss.

Women who are dedicated to women's boxing in Mexico "still have many difficulties," says Ortiz, who adds that "we give more spectacle, (but) we are not paid a quarter of what men earn. I knew I was going to win, because Delia is an experienced boxer and  had competed for a world title but she does not have much technique and I am devoted to be more intelligent," recalls Anabel.  Ortiz's win over Lopez earned her a purse of 12,000 pesos, while male champions earn at least three or four times that.

"Money is important, but I am in this more than anything because I like to fight,"
says Ortiz.

On June 22, 2007 in Tepic, Mexico, Anabel Ortiz won a ten-round unanimous ( 99-91,98-93,97-93) decision over Mayela Perez of Saltillo, Mexico who fell to 7-6-1 with the loss.  Perez had to receive two stitches in her right eyebrow, which bled profusely, after a fight that brought a standing ovation from the crowd at its end.

"I felt a bit lethargic after the first few rounds. I take nothing away from Ortiz, she's a great fighter. I've been promised an immediate rematch from promoter Ignacio Huizar. I'm hoping we can fight again sometime in December."  Carina's trainer Rick Noble added that "It's very tough to fight in this elevation. I take full responsibility for this loss as I know I over-trained Carina. Ortiz was ready to go and we take nothing away from her. We're looking for a rematch, preferably in the U.S."

On January 30, 2010 at Auditorio Siglo XXI in Puebla, Mexico, Anabel Ortiz won a six-round unanimous decision over Yesenia Martinez Castrejon who fell to 4-4-0 (3 KO's).

From the first round, Kikuchi was caught repeatedly by the razor sharp jabs and left hooks of Ortiz, who displayed excellent footwork and counter-punching abilities.  In the middle rounds, Ortiz controlled Kikuchi with repeated left hooks and hard rights. The open scoring system after the seventh round showed Ortiz’s wide lead on points: 69-64 on all of the scorecards so Kikuchi had to KO Ortiz in order to win. The Japanese challenger made a brave effort in the later rounds but she was unable to find the range to connect effectively while she continued to be hit hard by Ortiz. Kikuchi fell to 12-4-1 (5 KO's) with the loss while Ortiz improved to 7-1 (1 KO). After the fight Nanako Kikuchi was silent about whether she would retire from competition or continue in her boxing career.
