(AUG 30) The professional boxing card headlined
by former champions José Luis Castillo and Alfonso Gómez was abruptly called off
on August 29, 2026, after armed individuals stormed the venue, discharged
firearms, and set the ring ablaze in Hermosillo, Mexico.
The canceled "Noche Suprema" card also featured an
eight-round professional female bout between Jaqueline "Yaky" Obeso and Itzel
Enríquez for the WBC FECOMBOX regional featherweight title. Unlike the
influencer exhibition matches on the card, Obeso and Enríquez are legitimate
professional boxers brought in to highlight rising sports talent. Entering the
match, Obeso was an undefeated prospect holding a 5-0 record with 3 KOs from
Puerto Peñasco, while Enríquez was a veteran fighter from Veracruz with a 3-4-1
record.
The highly anticipated event, titled "Noche Suprema: El Norte Manda," was slated
to take place at the Centro de Usos Múltiples (CUM). Promoters packed the card
with a mix of professional bouts, influencer matchups, and a legacy exhibition
fight between two legendary Mexican boxing stars.
The two veterans successfully completed their official weigh-ins ahead of
Saturday night, and the stage was set for a massive crowd.
During the final hours of event preparations at the CUM arena, absolute chaos
erupted. Multiple Mexican media reports indicated that a group of armed
individuals bypassed security and breached the inner facility.
Within moments, gunshots echoed through the venue, causing staff and production
crew members to scramble for cover. The attackers then targeted the center
stage, intentionally setting the boxing ring on fire. Flames rapidly consumed
the canvas, ropes, and turnbuckles, rendering the fight area completely
destroyed and filling the venue with smoke.
Local authorities and emergency services quickly responded to the scene to
extinguish the fire and secure the perimeter. According to statements from the
event organizers and local police, the assault was classified as a targeted act
of vandalism directly aimed at the event's production and promotional entities.
Media reports on the internet stated that there were no injuries or deaths were
reported. Event organizers immediately issued a formal statement postponing the
card indefinitely out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the fighters,
trainers, staff, and fans. Full refunds have been authorized for all ticket
holders while Mexican law enforcement proceeds with a criminal investigation to
identify and apprehend the suspects.
