(AUG 23) How many times must we endure the
predictable "Sold Out" banner draped over every boxing event? It has become the
promoters’ favorite hollow buzzword. Today, declaring a fight "Sold Out"
carries about as much punch as a boxer claiming to be the "Greatest of All
Time"—it is loud, exhausted, and utterly meaningless.
So how do these promoters, entities, boxers, etc., come up with an event
that is "Sold Out" in arena?
The Reality Behind "Sold Out" in professional boxing events,
the public announcement of a "sold out" arena is often a calculated marketing
narrative rather than a reflection of organic ticket sales.
In fact, promoters and television networks routinely deploy specific operational
and financial strategies to artificially inflate attendance numbers, optimize
television optics, and manage financial losses when events under perform.
So how is that accomplished...hmmm....
There are actually verified methodes by the live entertainment:
One method is "Papering the House"---Comp Tickets. "Papering" is the industry
terme for distributing mass quantities of complimentary (free) tickets to give
the venue a full appearance.
Also, the Distribution Channels: When organic sales are low, promoters
distribute large blocks of tickets to local community groups, military
organizations, corporate sponsors, and radio stations just days or hours before
the event.
There goal of course, is to make sure the venue does not look vacant, which
could in fact damage the prestige of the promotions.
Now doing some research on this topic, it was pointed out that there may be
Professional Seat-Filling Services!
Apparently for major televised sports events and award shows, promoters contract
with specialized audience-management companies. These agencies provide a
coordinated logistical crew of
"seat-fillers" who enter
the venue through private entrances of under strict dress codes and
non-disclosure agreements. Here is one example:
https://otlseatfillers.com The whole function of a "seat-filler" is to
occupy vacant seats in the immediate view of the primary television cameras.
Another tactic is when ticket sales fall severely short of a stadium or arena's
maximum capacity, promoters execute physical layout adjustments. Large black
curtains or specialized tarps may be used and are hung to completely seal off
the upper bowls, balconies, or end zones.
And their possible intention? This officially removes those seats from the
available ticket inventory—allowing the event to technically claim a "sellout"
of the newly reduced capacity. It also legally and physically forces all ticket
holders into the lower tiers, condensing the crowd to create a high-energy
atmosphere for the cameras.
So next time you read that "Sold Out" garb...go to where the tickets are being
sold at, Ticketmaster, or otherwise and check out the seat capacity, that may
clue you in on what is really going on with an event!
