(JULY 30) It was recently announced that one of
our writers, Kirk Lang, will be receiving the George Smith Contribution to
Boxing Award from the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame on October 10 at
Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort.
He will be one of seven award winners across various
categories. In addition to Lang, Kamarre Kemp has been named the Amateur Boxer
of the Year; Chordale Booker earned the Professional Boxer of the Year honors;
Marilyn Rosa and Phyllis Roy are the Professional and Amateur Officials of the
Year, respectively; Paul Cichon was named the Trainer of the Year and the late
Mark Foster will receive the Willie Pep Courage Award.
In addition, the following individuals will be inducted into the Hall: former
USA New England featherweight and super featherweight champion Joey Negron;
former boxer and longtime trainer Luis Rosa Sr., trainer Kent Ward, judge and
referee Ken Ezzo, trainer Fernely Feliz Sr., and promoter Rich Cappiello.

Lang has been covering women’s boxing over the span
of three decades, with articles as well as videos.
He was there when Laila Ali fought her lone bout at
Madison Square Garden, a fourth-round stoppage of Shelly Burton, with her
legendary father watching from ringside.
Lang, who got involved in YouTube early on, also
conducted a video interview with Eileen Olszewski, a three-time national Golden
Gloves champion, after her third victory, at the Beacon Theatre, ahead of her
becoming a world champion.
More recently, Lang covered the trilogy bout between
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, which headlined the historic all-female card at
MSG. In his most recent write-up for our website, he did a detailed fight report
on Serrano’s second-round stoppage of Cheyenne Hanson, which tied the record for
most knockouts ever by a female boxer (32). He’s also written about New
England-based fighters that have been inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall
of Fame (Shelly Vincent and Liz Mueller) as well as contenders on the rise, such
as Stevie Jane Coleman.
“It is an honor to be recognized for my work,” said Lang. “October 10 will be
one of the highlights of my career, and my life.”
He added, “Last year, I covered Liz Mueller’s induction, as well as Katie Taylor
receiving the Professional Boxer of the Year Award. My trophy will look exactly
like Taylor’s, except she got hers for fighting, and I’m getting mine for
writing.”
