(JULY 23) WBAN has received some videos that
were in the Lady Tyger Trimiar's personal collection of boxing memorabilia, and
we will be uploading some of the video(s) as we go through them.
Part I:
This rare, historical footage captures a notable boxing segment on The Sally
Jessy Raphael Show featuring pioneers Marian 'Lady Tyger' Trimiar and Pat
Pineda.
The specific exhibition between Marian "Lady Tyger" Trimiar and Pat Pineda took
place during the early national syndication of The Sally Jessy Raphael Show.
The Talk Show’s Launch (1983): The Sally Jessy Raphael Show first launched in
October 1983. In 1984, the show heavily leaned into sports and physical stunts
to build its audience. Sally famously did interactive on-camera segments
featuring roller derby, professional wrestling, and boxing.
Pat Pineda made history as the first woman to receive a professional boxing
license in California, while Lady Tyger Trimiar was the legendary lightweight
champion out of New York who fiercely picketed for women’s rights in sports, and
to obtain the first boxing license in the state of New York, which she achieved
eventually, but never had a fight in New York.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, female boxers were routinely banned from
fighting each other in sanctioned, professional bouts in many states. To
circumvent these restrictions and draw media attention to their movement,
pioneers put on exhibitions.
The archival tape from this era features Trimiar and Pineda sparring in their
gear, showcasing the fundamentals of the sport to the studio audience. The
broadcast served as a vital platform for female boxers during a period of
limited mainstream coverage.
The historic video of this show was in the collection of Lady Tyger Trimiar
which she allowed WBAN to archive some footage that she had in her personal
memorabilia of her career and other historical landmarks in the sport.
