Can MVPW League Fix Women’s Boxing Problems

The roar of the crowd at Madison Square Garden still echoes. Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano gave women's boxing its defining moment. But those two legends are looking at retirement in 2026. The sport faces a dangerous question. What happens when the superstars leave?

Enter Jake Paul. His Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) just launched MVPW, a new league-style platform with a massive deal with ESPN. They have signed Alycia Baumgardner as the new face. They promise regular cards and better pay. But anyone who follows WBAN knows the history. Hype trains have come before. Real change is much harder.

The New Vision —Baumgardner And 3-Minute Rounds

MVPW is betting everything on Alycia Baumgardner. The 31-year-old unified champion (17-1, 7 KOs) has the look, the trash talk, and the Instagram followers. Jake Paul told ESPN that she has "crossover appeal that go far beyond boxing".

  • The Platform: MVPW has locked in U.S. broadcasts on ESPN linear and UK deals with Sky Sports for 2026-2028.
  • The Stakes: Baumgardner headlines MVPW 02 at Madison Square Garden against Bo Mi Re Shin.
  • The Difference: This fight uses 3-minute rounds. Baumgardner vacated her WBC title specifically to fight longer rounds (which the old guard refused to sanction).

This is the glamour shot. But the real test is happening everywhere else.

The Old Reality — Paying $20k To Fight (ABC News)

While MVPW gets the spotlight, the grassroots reality is brutal. An urgent report from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (April 2026) shows that for most female fighters, nothing has changed.

Australian champion Jess Messina is struggling to find opponents. The situation is dire:

  • Funding Fights: Messina’s gym had to pay $20,000 out of pocket to host her last fight.
  • No Paydays: After nine professional fights, Jess Messina admitted she "hasn't earned any money".
  • Sparring Issues: Due to a lack of women in the sport, women are forced to spar against men, which sports medicine experts say puts them at 1.5 to 2 times higher risk of concussion.

There is a massive gap between the Baumgardners on ESPN and the Jess Messinas trying to get a tenth fight.

The Gambler‘s Mentality In Every Boxer

Many boxing fans enjoy the same thrill through online slots themed after their favourite MMA fighters and boxing legends.

Games like The Lioness featuring Amanda Nunes, UFC Gold Blitz Extreme with official fighter likenesses, and It's Time!! created with MMA announcer Bruce Buffer bring the excitement of combat sports to the reels.

Players looking to try these fighting-themed slots without committing their own money can search for no deposit bonus codes for Australian casinos to unlock free credits or free spins just for signing up.

Finding a no deposit bonus casino with fair terms allows fans to explore new games risk-free. Australian players specifically benefit from a no deposit bonus casino australia that supports local payment methods like POLi and offers games in NZD.

The best no deposit bonus codes australia provide extra value without requiring an initial deposit, letting fans spin the reels on titles like The Lioness while keeping their own cash safe.

Who Is The Next Face?

With Taylor and Serrano fading out, the throne is vacant. MVP believes Baumgardner is the heir. But she faces competition from within her own stable.

  • Alycia Baumgardner – Confident, controversial, and holding three of the four major 130-pound belts.
  • Caroline Dubois – The young British lioness. She is headlining MVPW 01 in London and has already called out Baumgardner.
  • Holly Holm – The 44-year-old UFC legend is back. She has a rematch coming up against Stephanie Han on May 30th. She brings a massive crossover audience.

The MVPW league is essentially a reality show to see who grabs that crown.

The $64,000 Question — Is It A League Or A Series?

The confusion shows the hurdles ahead. MVP announced the platform as a "global platform" but called it a "league" on social media. Nakisa Bidarian (MVP CEO) admits it is not a closed UFC-style system. They will still work with the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF.

This means the old problems of bad judging, multiple champions, and sanctioning body politics still exist. Baumgardner already had to drop a belt just to fight under her preferred rules. If MVPW can't fix the alphabet soup of titles, it is just a television series, not a sport revolution.

Heritage vs. Hype

WBAN has been here since 1998. The site watched the sport go from barely legal in NSW (legalised only in 2009) to selling out The Garden. Sue "Tiger Lily" Fox built the archive to preserve history when no one else cared.

The International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame (partner of WBAN) continues to induct pioneers like Jackie Nava, Diana Prazak, and even promoter Don King for their 2025 class.

The truth: The pioneers fought for scraps. The new league offers a path to paydays. But the sport will only grow if the ESPN money eventually trickles down to the local gym in Port Macquarie, Australia. If the money stays only at the top, the same old cracks will appear.
