(APR 19) Maori boxer from Pipiwai, Lani
Daniels, has made history on multiple levels, winning her third world title in
her third weight division, stopping her opponent, Shadasia Green, in the 9th
round, as Green was taken out of the ring by stretcher.
Lani Daniels has made history as she won the WBO, IBF and The Ring Magazine
unified world super middleweight title. She is the first New Zealand-born to win
a Ring Magazine world title. She has won the most world titles in multiple
weight divisions for female boxers from New Zealand. She has matched Bob
Fitzsimmons' three weight division world title wins (out of the four that
Fitzsimmons won). And she has won the most world titles as a Maori boxer.
Daniels has been going on a journey in her last few fights, as after her loss
against Claressa Shields in July 2025, she parted ways with her long-term
trainer and manager, John Conway. She lost her IBF Light Heavyweight title
against German boxer Sarah Scheurich. However, she is now trained under the
first-ever IBF World women's champion, also from Northland, Daniella Smith. This
change made all the difference, as this is the best of Daniels we have seen in
years.
The fight was televised in New Zealand on Sky Sports and in America on ESPN.
Watching closely from the commentary box was promoter Jake Paul, who had nothing
but praise for Daniels the entire fight.
The fight itself, people deemed as an upset as Daniels came in as the massive
underdog. But each round was very much a 50/50 fight. As the fight went on, it
looked like it could be a draw as each boxer would take turns dominating a
round.
But ultimately, keeping Daniels ahead was something Green did not see often,
which was his Daniels being the aggressor and staying on Green's chest.
Something was different with Green as she was falling into Daniels’s fight game.
The commentary box would repeatedly say she should use her reach, her jab and
fight on the outside to beat Daniels, but Green fell into Daniels' fight.
Right at the end of round 7, Daniels landed heavy shots that rocked Green, which
changed the fight entirely. In round 8, Green was slower, she was fighting back,
but not to the amount of output that Daniels was delivering. Green was
repeatedly held, showing she was getting in trouble. At the end of round 8,
Green did not look good.
In round 9, Daniels found a home for that overhand right and kept hitting it
until the referee stopped the fight, making history for Lani Daniels.
After the fight, Green was sitting in her corner and not responding to the
doctors. The cameras cut away as they took Green out on a stretcher as a show of
respect. Green was taken out by ambulance to the hospital.
When it was Daniels' time to be interviewed, she was visibly upset as she was
emotional about Green being hurt.
