BROOKLYN, NY – The International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame is honoring the career and legacy of Cindy "Checkmate" Serrano, a retired multi-world champion and a modern trailblazer in women's boxing---spanning fifteen years from 2003 to 2018.

Serrano’s entry into boxing was unconventional. Initially picking up the sport to lose weight after her pregnancy, she quickly discovered a natural aptitude for the "sweet science". Training at the Glendale Boxing Club under the guidance of Jordan Maldonado, she turned professional in September 2003, winning her debut via unanimous decision.

Serrano has a decorated career and historic achievements in the sport. Born in Puerto Rico and fighting out of Brooklyn, New York, Cindy Serrano having earned the reputation as a technical, and exceptional boxer in the ring. Many of her accomplishments include winning the prestigious WBO world title in December 2016 and successfully defended her title in 2017.

Serrano is also a history-making sister act, alongside with her sister, Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano, with them both making history as the first pair of sisters to hold major world titles from top sanctioning bodies simultaneously, which in turn earned their achievement into the Guinness Book World Records.

Cindy Serrano is more than a champion; she is a trailblazer who fought through an era when women’s boxing received little recognition. She has inspired a generation of Puerto Rican and New York fighters to believe that the world stage belonged to them.
