Egypt Had it Tough at Paris 2024 -
but Hope Remains
February 17, 2026
(FEB 17) It’s a Winter
Olympics year, an event that seldom sees a competitor from
Egypt. In fact, it’s only happened once, during the 1984 renewal
in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Alpine skier Jamil El Reedy competed in
the downhill, and both regular and giant slalom disciplines. The
Cairo-born athlete achieved a best finish of 46th.
Of course,
women’s boxing isn’t contested at the Winter Olympics, so fans
will have to wait until the 2028 Summer Olympics to see if a
contender from Egypt makes the grade.
Let’s talk
about Egypt's only attempt at cracking the boxing medal table.
It’s a tale that’s barely a tale at all, but one that hints at
the difficulties of breaking through in a sport dominated by the
UK and the US.
Youmna Ayyad
As an Olympic
sport, women’s boxing has only existed since London 2012, so
medal opportunities have been limited. The Guinness World Record
for most golds won by a female boxer is just two, held jointly
between Great Britain's Nicola Adams and Claressa Shields of the
United States.

Egypt didn’t
break through until almost a decade later, at Paris 2024. The
occasion was the first time women's boxing had almost as many
events as the men's, with six weight classes of 50kg to 75 kg.
The men had seven. True event parity
has been confirmed for Los Angeles 2028.
Boxing was a
late addition to the Olympics in the 2020s after a fallout with
the International Boxing Association. Luckily, the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) took over a governing role for Tokyo
2021 and Paris 2024. The IOC has
refused to do the same for the next Games.
Egypt's first
female entrant, Youmna Ayyad, qualified for Paris 2024, but went
out before the first bell rang. A scheduled fight with
Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova was scrapped after Ayyad proved 900
grams over her reported 54kg and was disqualified.
Can Egypt
Take Its Place on the World's Boxing Stage?
Egypt’s
culture transcends both time and space. Its famous pyramids at
Giza (and other landmarks) explain the nation’s long-standing
history as a movie set. Tour company Travel2Egypt lists Luxor's
Karnak Temple and the Temple of Philae as Hollywood staples,
appearing in The Mummy Returns (2001) and Agatha Christie's
Death on the Nile (1978).
A more recent
example of Egypt inspiring media
involves games like the Eye of Horus slot from Reel Time
Gaming. These self-contained stories feature hieroglyphics and
other Egyptian iconography on the reels. The eponymous sun god
Horus stands the full height of the gameplay area.
Unfortunately,
a country's worldwide fame and influence doesn't necessarily
translate to success in all of its undertakings. There’s a good
ending for Egyptian boxing, though. At the end of 2025, Ayyad’s
compatriot, May Soliman, reportedly became the first woman from
Egypt to win an IBF title. The super flyweight pugilist now
wants a world title shot in 2026.
Overall,
women’s boxing is still in a tender state in Egypt, but the
high-profile success of Soliman and Ayyad (in reaching the
Olympics in the first place) bodes well for the next generation
of fighters.
