(FEB 8) Bend, Oregon’s Whitney Gomez, 127, faced Denise Moran, 126 ½, of San Diego, California, in a four round featherweight bout at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington on Friday February 6th. Gomez entered the fight unbeaten in her previous two fights, while Moran had only lost once in four outings.

Gomez was able to control much of the early action in the opening round as she used her height and reach advantage to keep Moran moving. Moran, late in the round, was able to step in close, and while avoiding Gomez’s jab, land shots to Gomez’s body. Morran looked to take advantage of short body punches while Gomez fired her jab, aiming it to keep Moran on the move.

The second round was close as Moran was able to close the distance and continued to land body shots. That forced Gomez to move to the outside from where she fired her jab and looked to follow it with a right to Moran’s body. Moran, though shorter, often crouched low making it more difficult for Gomez to target Moran’s body.

The third round was also close. Gomez found the range with her jab more often, and she fired it quickly to keep Moran from stepping in close. As Gomez’s jab kept Moran from stepping in close, Gomez found space to step to Moran and that enabled her to land punches to Moran’s body. As the round drew to an end, Moran was able to move to close the distance between the two and in so doing she was able to land a few body shots.

Finding some success while fighting in close, Moran worked to step close to Gomez and land body shots. Moran also fired the occasional right toward Gomez’s chin. Gomez regained the momentum in the round using her reach advantage to make Moran back away. As the round passed the midpoint, Gomez backed Moran on to the ropes and landed a flurry of body shots.
After four rounds on judge scored the fight 39-37 for Moran; the other two scored the fight even at 38. The fight would end in a majority draw.
