The world of boxing is steeped in tradition and history, and one name that
resonates deeply within this realm is Cleto Reyes. As the founder of Cleto Reyes
Gloves, his journey is not just a testament to entrepreneurial spirit but also
to a heartfelt passion for the sport.
Born on April 26, 1920, in Mexico City, Cleto Reyes Castro entered the world
during a tumultuous time marked by the aftermath of a decade-long revolutionary
struggle. Facing economic hardships, Cleto began working at the tender age of 12
in a saddlery that produced baseball gear. It was here that he learned the value
of craftsmanship and hard work, skills that would prove pivotal later in his
life.
In 1936, while attending elementary school, Cleto’s love for boxing began to
blossom. The proximity of the “Peralvillo Cozumel Arena” to his school ignited
his passion as he eagerly watched matches unfold. By 1938, he couldn't resist
stepping into the ring himself, participating in an amateur fight.
However, Cleto's resolve waned after experiencing the harsh realities of the
sport, leading him to focus instead on repairing gloves.
With a newfound focus, Cleto Reyes dedicated himself to developing high-quality
boxing gloves. His commitment paid off when the local boxing commission, COMBOX
DF, approved his products, allowing him to cater to the needs of fighters in
Mexico. The year 1945 was monumental for Cleto Reyes Gloves, as they made their
debut in a world championship fight held at “La Condesa Arena.” In this match,
Mexico's own Juan Zurita faced off against Ike Williams, marking a significant
milestone for both the fighter and the glove maker.
As his reputation grew, Cleto realized the importance of independence in his
craft. Backed by the unwavering support of his wife and children, he embarked on
a journey that would take his gloves from local rings to international arenas.
He understood that to achieve his dreams, he needed to expand his reach beyond
Mexico.
In 1965, Cleto took a bold step by appointing his first commercial
representative in Los Angeles, California. This decision marked the beginning of
the global distribution of his gloves, paving the way for their popularity in
major U.S. cities and beyond. Cleto Reyes Gloves were quickly embraced by
fighters, trainers, and boxing aficionados alike, known for their exceptional
quality and durability.

As Don Cleto's health began to decline in the early 1970s, his eldest son,
Alberto Reyes, stepped in to ensure the legacy continued. With a keen
entrepreneurial vision, Alberto registered CLETO REYES as a trademark in 1975
and founded Industria Reyes S.A. de C.V. in 1979. Under his stewardship, the
brand expanded further, solidifying its position in the competitive sports
equipment market.
Today, Cleto Reyes products are recognized worldwide, exported to five
continents, and utilized by professional boxers who seek the best gear to
enhance their performance. The gloves have received endorsements from major
boxing organizations, further cementing their status as a top choice among
champions.
In 1994, the company received the prestigious National Exports Award from the
Mexican Trade and Industry Department, recognizing its contributions to the
industry and its dedication to excellence. Cleto Reyes' legacy is not merely
about gloves; it represents a lifelong commitment to the sport of boxing,
reflecting the same dedication and passion he exhibited from his youth.
Cleto Reyes Gloves continue to honor his
legacy, serving athletes around the globe and inspiring future generations of
fighters and makers alike. Today, every punch thrown while wearing these iconic
gloves echoes the determination and craftsmanship of Cleto Reyes Castro—a true
champion in the world of boxing.
