Controversy in the Ring: Imane Khelif Appeals to CAS Over Mandatory Genetic Testing Ban

(SEPT 9) Imane Khelif has been banned from the 2025 World Boxing Championships in England. Khelif refused to participate in new genetic sex tests. Five French female boxers will not be able to take part either, after missing the testing deadline.

Khelif has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing that she shouldn’t be forced to take a genetic test. World Boxing says every female fighter over 18 must take the test, and that it’s necessary after past controversies. CAS has said that Khelif’s ban will remain until a full hearing is completed. No date for a hearing has been set yet.

Khelif’s controversies

Khelif won welterweight gold at the 2024 Olympics, one of three medals for Algeria. Khelif is one of seven gold medallists for her country. She is known for her speed, precision, and tactical intelligence in the ring.

Khelif won’t be competing, but other Paris Olympians will attend the World Championship in Liverpool. Mexico’s Citlalli Ortiz, Poland’s Julia Szeremeta, and Spain’s Laura Fuertes are among the big names. Hosts Great Britain have Paris competitor Chantelle Reid.

2025 World Boxing Championship

This year’s event is the inaugural
World Boxing Championship.   World Boxing is a newly established federation, and it will oversee boxing at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The Championship will be the largest boxing tournament ever held in Great Britain. It’s also the first time male and female boxers are competing for the World Boxing Champion title at the same event.

Incompatible with French law?

The
French Boxing Federation, having had five fighters ruled out, has said that imposing the test is incompatible with French law. According to the Independent, FFBoxe said it was informed that female athletes were required to provide results of a “femininity test”. The federation said that French law prohibits them from conducting these tests in France or abroad without a medical prescription.
FFBoxe said the ruling was a “profound injustice” and that their athletes were being punished for a “bureaucratic failure” and a poorly communicated policy.

Implications for boxing and gender policies

Khelif has not been a stranger to debate. After her welterweight gold at the 2024 Olympics, some critics questioned the fairness of her victories, citing her speed and strength compared with other competitors. While her tactical skill and precision in the ring are widely praised, opponents and commentators have occasionally raised concerns about whether she has an advantage over her peers. The earlier debates resurfaced ahead of the World Boxing Championships.

The controversy surrounding Khelif and the French fighters raises questions about gender verification in sport. Critics argue that mandatory genetic testing could discourage participation and violate athletes’ rights. Supporters of strict testing claim it’s necessary to maintain fairness in competition. Federations across all sports will have to carefully balance fairness with privacy and legal frameworks.
World Boxing hasn’t indicated whether it will adjust its policies following CAS deliberations, and athletes, coaches, and national federations will be watching closely. The case could set a precedent for how other international sporting bodies approach gender testing, potentially influencing the Olympics and various other professional competitions in future.
