(JULY 12) Last night at the Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York, main
arena, to a sold out house, televised on Netflix, women’s boxing was
showcased like no other all-female boxing card that received global attention
and recognition.
There were eight top-notch female boxing bouts on the card with
four of them televised with, many vying for or defending their world titles. The
card was promoted by Nakisa Bidarian and Jake Paul of Most Valuable Promotions.
All I can say, after covering the sport for 27 plus years---it is about time! We
had so many talented female boxers prior to today’s sport but they fought
outside the ring to even get a slight opportunity to get inside the ring.
On Netflix the following female bouts took place, and believe me these female
boxing champions did “Women’s Boxing” proud – and it was a win-win for women’s
boxing with the massive exposure that it received last night.

In the mainliner, Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano
took place that was a trilogy
for the two. Taylor was 2-0 against Serrano, but many countless boxing fans
thought that Serrano had won in previous fights. But with that said---Taylor won
the bout by a majority 10-round decision with scores of 95-95, 96-93, and 97-93.

In the co-main it was a 10-round championship fight between Alycia Baumgardner
vs. Jennifer Miranda. In the beginning rounds, both boxers were cautious, with
Miranda stumbling in the second round and fell but it was not considered a
knockdown.

About in round four Baumgardner started getting busy in the round –
and when going to her corner she was advised by her corner to use her jab more
to set up her right hand. It was a good solid fight with Baumgardner with her
successfully defending her IBF, WBC, and WBO Super Featherweight world titles.

They both had some great exchanges in this action-packed bout. Miranda received
her first loss as a professional boxer and is now 12-0-1 (1KO); Baumgardner
raised her record to 16-1-0 (7KO).
In a world title bout featuring Savannah “Silent Assassin” Marshall, 167, 13-1-0
(10KO), of the United Kingdom vs. Shadasia Green, 15-1-0 (11KO), of New Jersey,
USA, the two fought for the IBF and WBO World Super Middleweight title.
When they first began fighting in the early rounds there was a lot of holding
and both smothering their punches by being too close to each other. Marshall did not really take advantage of her long reach in the fight and
bent down fighting Green where she was taller than Green.

Green had one point taken from her due to holding
issues. One of the most touching moments of the event was when Green won the
belts and fell to her knees and got emotional about the long struggle of 20
years of getting where she finally got in boxing.

Shadasia Green won the bout by a split decision and final judges scores were 96-93,
95-94 and 96-93.
One of the best fights was the bout between Ellie Scotney
vs. Yamileth Mercado. This bout was a war
throughout the fight.
Ellie, 121 ½, was the quicker, faster and more accurate puncher in the bout. Mercado, 119 ½, threw a lot of leather but
at
times missed her target.

Ellie successfully defended her IBF, WBC and WBO Super Bantamweight
World Titles. Final judges scores were 100-90, 98-92, and 98-92.
On the undercard fights:
Chantelle Cameron, 139, won a ten-round unanimous decision over Jessica Camara,
139 ½. The two were fighting for the WBC Interim World Super Lightweight title.
Final judges scores were 99-91, 98-92, and 99-91. Cameron is now 20-1-0 (8KO).
It should be noted that Cameron is the only female boxer to defeat Katie Taylor
in their first fight together, and then she lost to Taylor in her rematch.
In another matchup, Ramla Ali, 121 ½, of United Kingdom, won an eight-rounder
over Lila Furtado, 121 ¼,of Brazil, in a non-title bout. The scores were close
with judges scores as 77-75, 78-74, and 77-75. Sparkle Lee, our 2015
International Women’s Boxing Hall of Famer, was referee of the match. Ali is now
10-2-0 (2KO) and Furtado is 11-3-0 (2KO)
Tamm Thibeault, 159 ½, of Quebec, Canada, remains undefeated at now 3-0-0 (2KO)
when she won TKO 2:18, in the fifth round over Mary Casamassa, of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, 156 ¾, experiencing her first loss as a professional. The bout was
scheduled for eight rounds. Casamassa went down in the first round. This bout
was three minute rounds.
In a battle of the bantamweights, Australia’s Cherneka Johnson, 116 ¾, now
18-2-0 (8KO), won by a ninth TKO stoppage of Shurretta Metcalf, 117, now 14-5-2
(2KO), of Dallas, Texas, to fight for the IBF, WBC
(vacant), and WBO (vacant) Bantamweight titles. The bout was scheduled for ten
rounds.
