Busy Weekend for Women's Boxing Worldwide

(OCT 23) This past weekend, there were some interesting women's boxing matches on various boxing events around the world. Most of the boxing action took place on Saturday, October 19th.  Without further ado we will start with the busiest night of the weekend.


Shannon Courtenay (left) vs. Catherine Tacone Ramos (right)

At the Copper Box Arena, in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Hackney Wick, Catherine Tacone Ramos, 124, of Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, won a six-rounder by points over Shannon Courtenay, 128 1/4, of Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. The Referee score the fight as 58-56.

Courtenay, known as "The Baby Face Assassin," started the fight strong....however, Tacone Ramos, with her  pressure and counter-punching skills, turned the tide in her favor.  As for Courtenay, although she fell short in this bout, her resilience and tenacity showcased her potential for future success.


Brisa Abigail Rosario Alfonzo

At the Estadio Cubierto Aconcagua Arena, in Ciudad Mendoza, Argentina, there were two female bouts on this card that featured  Brisa Abigail Rosario Alfonzo, 126 3/4, of Argentina, who won a six-round unanimous decision over Daiana Marisa Molina, 120 1/4, of Chubut, Argentina. The final judges scores were 55-57, on all cards. In the second female bout, Lucia Elena Garcia Ovejero, 111 1/4, won by a four-round majority decision over Dalma Cecilia Alaniz, 112 1/2, of Cordoba, Argentina. Final judges scores 37-39, 37-39, and 38-38.

Both bouts were closely contested, with each fighter displaying their unique styles and strategies. The victories for Brisa Abigail Rosario Alfonzo and Lucia Elena Garcia Ovejero were well-deserved, highlighting their talent and commitment to the sport.

In other boxing action in Argentina, in the city of Buenos Aires, Camila Solange Heredia, 106 34, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, won a four-round unanimous decision over Erica Gonzalez, 107 3/4, also of Argentina, both making their pro debuts. Final Scores were 40-35 on all cards. The victory marked a promising start to Heredia's professional career, as she showcased her skills and determination in the ring.  This win will undoubtedly serve as a stepping stone towards greater achievements in her professional career.

In Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato, Maria Guadalupe Atilano Gomez, 115 3/4, had an eight-round split draw with Fatima Martinez Cuevas, 117 3/4.

In Guatemala City, Guatamala, female boxer Sara Anti Gabriel, 154, of Mixco, Guatamala, won by a [1:10] one-round TKO over Katherine Tobar, 154, of Jalapa Guatemala.


Nicola Hopewell

At the Skate Central, in Sheffield, United Kingdom, Nicola Hopewell won a ten-round unanimous decision over Mary Aina Abbey. The two were fighting for the Commonwealth Boxing Council Flyweight title.  Hopewell's victory is a testament to her hard work and dedication in the sport. This win not only brings her the prestigious Commonwealth title but also puts her on the radar of boxing enthusiasts worldwide.

At the Hall Omnisport, Farciennes, Belgium's Djemilla Gontaruk, 136 1/4, of Herstal, Liege, Belgium, with a boxing record now after her fight of 17-11-2 (3KO), won by a third round RTD over Diana Kulinova, 136 1/4, of Komárno, Slovakia, in a scheduled six round bout.  Kulinova's record fell to 4-13-0 (2KO).

In Rafael Calzada,  on the undercard, Tamara Anabela Fernandez Cappuccio, 114 1/2, won a six-round unanimous decision over Mariquena Salome Salega, 116. Final judges scores were 60-53 on all cards.


Kirstie Bavington / Marine Beauchamp

At the Espace in Mayenne, Laval, Kirstie Bavington, 145, won a ten-round split decision over Marine Beauchamp, 146 1/2.  The two were fighting for the EBU Welterweight title.  Judges scores were 94-96, 98-92, and 97-93. The fight was intense from the first bell, with both boxers showcasing their skills and determination. The split decision reflects the closely contested nature of the bout, leaving both fighters with a sense of accomplishment.  Despite the outcome, it was clear that both Bavington and Beauchamp gave it their all in the ring. Their performance showcased their individual talents in the sport of women's boxing.

At the Hippodrome Municipal, Douai, Segolene Lefebvre won a fifth round TD over Juliana Vanesa Basualdo, in a scheduled ten-round bout.

At the Convention Center, in South Padre Island, Naima Garcia, 129, of Harlingen, Texas, won by a second round TKO over Jessie Clark, 129, of Nacogdoches, Texas;  in Salle Bayard, Charleville-Mézičres,  Justine Lallemand, 118, of Charleville-Mézičres, Ardennes, France, won a six-round bout by a unanimous decision over Ivanka Ivanova, 118, of Sofia, Bulgaria.  The final scores were 54-60, 54-60, and 55-59; In Australia, at the Mercure Gold Coast Resort, Carrara, Louise Creaven, of Queensland, Australia, won an eight-round unanimous decision over Connie Chan, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The two were fighting for a local Australian title. 

On Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the Teatro Las Vegas, Madrid, Spain...Jennifer Miranda, of Madrid, Spain, won a ten-round unanimous decision over Teresa Almengor, of David, Panama.  Final judges scores were 100-90 on all cards. 

Also, on October 20, 2024, at the 176BOX, in Toyonaka, Japan,
Marina Loreto, 104 1/4, of Itami, Hyogo, Japan, won an eight-round unanimous decision over Mont Blanc Miki, 104, of Tokyo, Japan.  Final judges scores were 73-79, 72-80, and 73-79.  The two were fighting for the WBO Asia Pacific Minimum title.
