Updated story after finding out that Sandy Ryan was assaulted before this fight took place Mayer vs. Ryan

(SEPT 30) NEW YORK CITY) —I am updating this press release (excerpt of the release) that we published--- after finding out that shortly before this fight took place, that Ryan was assaulted with someone throwing can of red paint striking her with red paint all over her before this fight.  This was a great fight, but should it have happened right before Ryan being assaulted---probably not!

Ryan said, "I know I shouldn’t have fought after I was attacked leaving my hotel but I couldn’t let them win like that. I was fighting off empty and still felt I won the fight." Ryan added that her team has obtained video footage of the incident and are in contact with local police. Speaking after the fight, Ryan, who was defending her title for the third time, said she believes the incident contributed to her narrow loss.

This (excerpt of a press release) is what we published before learning about the ASSAULT.

Last night at the Madison Square Garden in New York, Mikaela Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs) defeated Sandy Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) by a close ten-round majority decision to win the WBO welterweight world title.

The fight was a fierce battle, with both fighters displaying their skills and determination. Mayer's superior boxing technique and ring generalship seemed to give her the edge throughout the fight. However, Ryan showed great resilience and landed some significant punches, keeping the contest competitive until the final bell.

This win not only adds another title to Mayer's collection but also solidifies her position as one of the top fighters in the welterweight division.

The crowd at Madison Square Garden was treated to an exciting night of boxing, with several undercard fights delivering thrilling action.

As for Ryan, despite the loss, she should be proud of her performance. Her tenacity and skill were evident throughout the fight, and she proved herself to be a worthy challenger.

This bout serves as a reminder of the incredible talent and competitiveness in women's boxing. The sport continues to grow and gain recognition, thanks to warriors like Mayer and Ryan who leave it all in the ring. Mayer prevailed in most of the exchanges and clinched the victory with scores of 97-93 and 96-94, overruling one judge’s 95-95 draw.

Mayer said, "It was similar to how I thought it would go. I always said before that I respected Sandy as a boxer. She has a big pedigree, just like myself, but I knew I was gonna beat her to the punch. I knew I was faster. I knew I was sharper. And that's exactly what I did.

Ryan said, "I'm obviously disappointed, and I'm not taking nothing away from the decision. But before coming to the venue, I don't know if you guys seen, but I had a hit and run {with paint outside the hotel}. And that was definitely set up. I'm not taking nothing away from the win, but it unsettled me.

"It threw me off a bit of my game plan because I just wanted to fight. And you saw at the start of the fight, I was handling her quite well on the jab. I was boxing her and then I started to pick it up. But then, I was obviously pushing it too hard.

“It's nice to fight in America again. But I just don't like the circumstances that happened to me before the fight. But I can't take nothing away from that. It is what it is.”

Other results on the card:

Xander Zayas (20-0, 12 KOs) won by a unanimous decision over le Damian Sosa (25-3, 12 KOs);  Bruce Carrington won a hard-fought 10-round majority decision over Sulaiman Segawa; Vito Mielnicki Jr. (20-1, 12 KOs) won a 10-round majority decision against Khalil El Harraz (16-6-1, 2 KOs);   Floyd Diaz (13-0, 3 KOs) won an eight-round point verdict over Mario Hernandez (12-5-1, 4 KOs); Elvis Rodriguez (17-1-1, 13 KOs) won a unanimous 10-round points win over Kendo Castañeda (21-7, 9 KOs);  Tiger Johnson (14-0, 6 KOs) won an eight-round unanimous decision against Puerto Rico's Yomar Alamo (22-3-1, 13 KOs); and Rohan Polanco (14-0, 9 KOs) stopped Marcelino Lopez (37-5-1, 22 KOs) in the sixth round.
