Sandy Ryan to Defend her WBO Welterweight World Title against Mikaela Mayer at Madison Square Garden
by Sue TL Fox
September 25, 2024

(SEPT 25) NEW YORK CITY - NY – On Friday night at the theater at Madison Square Garden, in New York, in the mainliner, Mikaela Mayer, 19-2-0 (5KO) of Colorado Springs, Colorado is set to fight WBO Welterweight World champion Sandy Ryan, 7-1-1 (3KO), of Derbyshire, United Kingdom, where Ryan will be defending her title in a scheduled 10-round bout.

Mayer's last fight that took place in January of 2024, was against Natasha Jonas, where she lost by a close split decision for the IBF Welterweight World title. Ryan's last fight took place in March of 2023 when she defeated her opponent Terri Harper by a fourth round RTD in a ten-rounder where she won the WBO Welterweight World title. This will be a third defense of her world title.

This match-up promises to be an intriguing clash between two skilled fighters. Mayer, determined to bounce back from her recent defeat, will be eager to claim the WBO Welterweight World title. However, Ryan has shown impressive form in her recent fights and will look to solidify her reign as champion with a successful defense.

Mayer's technical prowess and speed will be matched against Ryan's relentless aggression and power. It will be a test of strategy, endurance, and willpower as these two warriors vie for the WBO Welterweight World title.

The anticipation for this fight is palpable, as boxing enthusiasts eagerly await to see who will emerge victorious. Both Mayer and Ryan have proven themselves to be formidable opponents, and their clash in the ring will undoubtedly be exciting to watch for boxing fans.

Also, Zayas (19-0, 12 KOs) will face Damian Sosa (25-2, 12 KOs) in the 10-round junior middleweight co-feature, and Carrington (12-0, 8 KOs) will open the ESPN-televised tripleheader in a 10-round featherweight clash against Sulaiman Segawa (17-4-1, 6 KOs).

This card featuring the female bout, and Zayas-Sosa, and Carrington-Segawa will be broadcast LIVE on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.
