In the world of women's boxing, few names resonate with the
force and reverence as that of Katie Taylor. The Irish veteran
has shattered ceilings and set new benchmarks, boasting a career
that is both inspiring and wildly successful.
On a recent edition of the Overlap podcast, promoter Eddie Hearn
detailed how it was Taylor who was primarily responsible for
women competing in the Olympic Games. Speaking to Gary Neville
and Co., he said "She went to the IOC and told them you have to
allow women's boxing in the Olympics. They said no we're not
doing that and she wouldn't stop. In the end, the IOC said to
come and have an exhibition bout, bring a friend or something
and so she took the number two ranked fighter in the world. In
the end, the IOC said oh my god you're in. She actually got
women's boxing into the Olympics."
So with Taylor being one of the most important figures in women's
sport as a whole, we decided to take a look at her three most
impressive victories throughout her illustrious career.
Redemption Against Chantelle Cameron - November 2023
Taylor's rematch against Chantelle Cameron was more than a
fight; it was a quest for redemption. Six months prior,
betting websites providing odds and
offers on women's boxing had made
her a narrow favourite in her mission to become a two-weight
undisputed champion. Unfortunately for her, she suffered the
only professional loss of her career, on home turf in Dublin, no
less. The second time around, she welcomed the English champion
back to the Emerald Isle in a rematch with massive stakes.
The fight was a tactical masterclass. Utilising her speed and
precision, she managed to out maneuver Cameron, who had
previously bested her in
comprehensive fashion. The fight went
the istance, with the home favourite winning by a razor-thin -
but deserved - majority decision (98-92, 96-94, 95-95), a
testament to the closely fought battle.
Beats Amanda Serrano in Biggest Female Fight of All Time - April
of
2022
Taylor's bout against Amanda Serrano was billed as the biggest
female fight of all time, and it lived up to every ounce of its
hype. Held at the iconic Madison Square Garden, this fight
marked the first time two women headlined a main event at the
venue, setting a precedent for the sport.
The fight was a thrilling display of skill, heart, and
resilience. Both fighters traded blows in a contest that was too
close to call, with Taylor
ultimately emerging victorious via a
split decision. This win was significant not just for Taylor but
for women's boxing as a whole. It showcased the depth of talent
in the sport and proved that female fighters could headline
major sporting events, drawing large audiences and delivering
compelling performances. And if that wasn't enough, it even won
the coveted Event of the Year award from the highly-respected
Ring Magazine.
Beats Delfine Persoon to Become Undisputed Lightweight Champion
- April 2019
Taylor's decision victory over Delfine Persoon in April 2019 is
perhaps one of her most defining moments. This win saw her
become the undisputed lightweight champion, holding all four
major titles simultaneously, as well as becoming the inaugural
The Ring champion.
The fight with the Belgian titleholder was a war of attrition,
with both fighters giving as good as they got. It was a brutal,
relentless contest that pushed Taylor to her limits. Yet,
through sheer will and skill, Taylor managed to edge out Persoon
in a hotly contested match that went the full ten rounds.
Plenty of fans thought that Persoon did enough to get the
victory, so Taylor agreed to a rematch 14 months later. And the
second time around, she dispatched her opponent in a much more
dominant fashion, this time winning unanimously across all three
scorecards.
