Irish boxer Katie Taylor is
preparing to box in front of her home supporters in Dublin in
May. Her promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed he is working on a
huge fight that has the potential to be one of the biggest
events in the sport in 2024.
Taylor has not been in the ring since she defeated Chantelle
Cameron in their rematch last November. This will be the third
straight fight that she will headline the 3Arena in Dublin.
Trilogy With Cameron
The sport of boxing already has some huge fights lined up in
2024. Anthony Joshua is set to take on former UFC heavyweight
champion Francis Ngannou in a fascinating clash in Riyadh. AJ is
the 1/4 favourite in the Anthony Joshua v Francis Ngannou odds
for that fight. There is also an undisputed heavyweight
championship bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk to look
forward to.
However, should Taylor sign to face Cameron in the third
installment of their trilogy, the event could top both of those
heavyweight fights. The pair have produced two thrilling fights
so far and would go into their third clash at 1-1.
Taylor currently holds the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO
light-welterweight titles. Her
only professional defeat came against Cameron in May 2023. Victory in this decider could push
her back to the number one spot in the pound-for-pound rankings.
Cameron holds an 18-1 record since turning pro. She has revealed
contract negotiations with Taylor’s team have not been smooth so
far, but she is keen to make this fight happen in May.
Amanda Serrano Another Option for Taylor
Should a deal with Cameron not be reached for 2024, Hearn is
also considering pursuing a fight between Taylor and Amanda
Serrano. The pair met in April 2022 at Madison Square Garden in
New York. It was one of the biggest women’s main events in
history.
Taylor, who was handed
the split decision in her favour, was set
to face Serrano for a second time in 2023 but the seven-division
world champion was forced to pull out due to an injury. That led
to the Irish woman fighting Cameron and losing her titles.
Serrano is now 35 years old and is at the back end of her career
in the sport, so a rematch with Taylor in May could be her last
chance to add to her legacy in the ring. She has been desperate
to get a second shot at the champion, as she felt she had done
enough to win their opening encounter.
The Puerto Rican was scheduled to fight in a homecoming in San
Juan against Nina Meinke, but that bout was postponed minutes
before the contest, as Serrano was deemed medically unfit to
fight due to an eye injury.
Serrano’s eye is expected to heal in time for a fight in May.
Her promoter, Jake Paul, is now working on her next appearance,
and a clash with Taylor is likely to be his priority for his
fighter.
Taylor has already begun training for her next appearance,
despite her opponent being unnamed yet. She is expected to fight
twice in 2024, with her second bout likely to come in November.
