Boxing is a sport that requires
excellent technique and incredible endurance, but ultimately raw
power makes up the foundations of any elite boxer.
Throughout history, there have been many individuals who have
boasted remarkable knockout potential in the women's side of the
sport, and their names have been etched permanently into history
as a result.
Here we will look at the female boxers of the past renowned for
their striking power who utilised it to win huge titles in
boxing.
Ann Wolfe
Ann Wolfe is widely regarded as one of the most powerful female
fighters in the history of boxing. She retired in 2006, and
there has not been a heavy hitter quite like her since. This
represents a significant contrast to the men's game which will
see some of its heaviest hitters ever compete in 2024.
Francis Ngannou, who has the strongest punch on human record,
will meet Anthony Joshua in March. The Englishman is a huge
favourite in
Joshua vs. Ngannou betting at 1/6, and an early
stoppage is likely with a victory via knockout offered at 2/5 in
the latest boxing odds.
Wolfe may not be quite as well known amongst the current
generation of boxing fans compared to the strongest men's stars,
but her record speaks for itself in terms of how her knockout
power led to sustained success.
The American won 24 fights across her career with a knockout
rate of 67%, which included the greatest early stoppage in the
history of the women's sport.
Over her eight years in the ring she won an array of title belts
and became the first woman ever to be a world champion across
three
different weight classes.
Wolfe has a strong case for being the most deadly female boxer
ever although there is one other legendary name that compares to
her when it comes to lethal knockout power and longevity in the
sport.
Lucia Rijker
Lucia Rijker is one of the most well-known boxers in the history
of the women's game. As the driving force in the early
development of the sport, her front-foot aggressive fighting
style was one that had not been seen before.
Rijker often dominated opponents with her heavy striking from
the offset, which allowed her to regularly end contests in the
early rounds. Her style and conviction in the ring earned a
regular title from the press of 'The Most Dangerous Woman in the
World'.
The Dutch fighter maintained a perfect record of 17 straight
wins during her career and achieved knockouts in a remarkable 14
of them - this makes her statistically the biggest knockout
threat in history.
Judging the outright strongest female puncher throughout history
is an almost impossible task. However, looking at knockout
percentages and judging from media-backed reputations results in
this pair being the clear frontrunners for the title.
The statistics suggest Rijker was the more powerful, and the
media certainly agreed with the title they created for her.
However, Wolfe was also the most feared fighter of her
generation, and she even once delivered
the most brutal knockout
in women's boxing history against Vonda Ward.
The strongest puncher in history comes down to whether a higher
amount of knockouts or having dealt the greatest knockout ever
carries more weight. Whichever you put more faith in, this pair
have firmly cemented their places as heavy-hitting legends
regardless.
