Women’s boxing has certainly come
on leaps and bounds in recent years. The sport has entered the
limelight and has captured mainstream attention.
The media has taken notice of how talented some of the females
that step into the ring are, with many broadcasters starting to
show the fights that take place. Some have even decided to have
female-only cards, although we are still a long way off from
that being a typical approach.
With so many talented female boxers now stepping into the ring
as professional fighters, it can be difficult to know which of
them are at the top of their game. While a few names could be
argued to have elevated the women’s division to the heights it
has reached today, there is a flurry of superstars rising
through the ranks to be the next big thing.
Let’s take a look at five of the boxers who are reigning supreme
at the moment:
Claressa Shields - 14-0
Arguably
one of the best
at the moment in women’s boxing, Claressa Shields has done it all. Despite having only had 14
fights, she has won each of them. Although only two have been by
way of knockout, she has held multiple titles across various
weight classes already, with many being undisputed. She holds
all four world titles in boxing (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO).
Chantelle Cameron - 18-0
While Chantelle Cameron has fought in four more fights in
comparison to Shields, the English boxer is one that has been
rising through the ranks at a rapid pace in recent times. She is
a current world champion across two classes (Super-featherweight
and Lightweight), while she is also the undisputed
light-welterweight champion. She recently put on a clinic
against the then-undefeated Katie Taylor last month (May 2023),
thus making her one of the best in between the ropes.
Katie Taylor - 22-1
Although she may have been beaten for the first time
last month,
Katie Taylor still remains one of the biggest stars of women’s
boxing. The Irish fighter is still the undisputed lightweight
champion, arguably one of the best in pound-for-pound rating.
Her fight with Amanda Serrano in 2022 was one of the best the
sport has ever seen, and it would not be a surprise if her
likely rematch with Cameron were to be of another gold calibre,
too.
Amanda Serrano - 44-2-1
You can not talk about women’s boxing and those reigning supreme
without including Serrano. Nicknamed “The Real Deal,” she lives
up to the moniker and some. She is a seven-division champion and
holds the world record across the sport. What makes her one of
the best is that she is able to seamlessly move between weight
divisions and compete without any repercussions of the move.
Serrano even went on a 28-win streak before clashing with Taylor
in 2022 in one of the best fights of all time. She is also a
two-time pound-for-pound WBAN World title belt holder.
Alycia Baumgardner - 14-1
Alycia Baumgardner is another fighter that has recently made
headlines in women’s boxing. She is 14-1, but seven of her wins
have been via way of KO. Her punching power is what has caught
the attention of observers, with many suggesting this is what
makes her one of the best in the game at the moment. She
continues to put in quality performances, and it would not be a
surprise if she were to leave a lasting legacy in the future.
