Nicila Costello to make history in women's boxing

(JUNE 12) South Island New Zealand born Australian boxer Nicila Costello will make history when she fights against Egypt-born Australian Mai Soliman in the southern hemisphere's first women's professional boxing fight to compete with three-minute rounds.

For years it's been a topic of discussion if women should be boxing in three-minute and over twelve rounds. However, there has only been a handful of times this has happened professionally. In amateur boxing, women boxers fight three-by-three-minute rounds like men. On the 30th of June, for the first time in the southern hemisphere, women's boxing will be fought in three-minute rounds.

Queensland state and Australian national champion Nicila Costello have come off two losses in a row after losing against Michelle Preston for the WBA Oceania title and Jasmine Parr for the WIBA World title. However, Costello has fought amazingly in both fights, taking on highly skilled boxers. She aims to get back on track in her career while making history.

Since her professional boxing debut in 2021, Costello has gotten better in every fight. Originally an explosive fight could stop her opponent. But the more fights she has fought, the better she gets and the more she improves on her technique.

Outside of boxing, Costello has been very active, working hard as an owner of two franchised gyms. Owning the franchise gyms F45 Training Hamilton and F45 Cairns Inner West in Queensland, Australia.

Unfortunately, Costello has been on the receiving end of homophobic abuse on social media. It is no secret that Costello is a proud lesbian with a wife and child. Almost on a weekly basis, Costello receives Instagram comments, direct messages and replies to her nasty stories. Yet, Costello seems to take it well with such an amazingly positive attitude.

Costello will take on Egypt-born boxer Mai Soliman. Soliman made her professional boxing debut in 2022 when she defeated Ali Jensen. However, she quickly turned around when she fought for the Australasian title against Bec Moss in her second fight; however, she lost the fight by a split decision. We last saw Soliman in the ring in March when she defeated Sarah Higginson.

Promoted by Paul Nasari, the fight will happen on June 30th at Revesby Workers Club, Revesby, New South Wales, Australia. The Main Event will feature Nigerian-born Australian Nestor Bolum vs Australian Liam Pope for the vacant Australian national featherweight title.
