(MARCH 18) For the first
time ever since WBO was created in 1988, the WBO has released
its Women's boxing rankings. For the first time ever, WBO, WBA,
IBF and WBC have full world women's boxing rankings.
This comes after the IBF released their women's heavyweight
rankings in January for the first time since April 2011. This is
important to have these rankings as we get close to having
equality between men and women, especially now being ranked the
same way. This has been a long time coming with the community
calling for this for years. Me personally I have been emailing
them since 2013 for women's rankings.
We see slight differences with the WBO women's rankings compared
to the rest of the rankings with IBF, WBA and WBC. Firstly, the
WBO have included the Heavyweight, Cruiserweight and Light
Heavyweight divisions. Compare that the other bodies, the IBF
only has Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight and WBC and WBA only
have Heavyweight before hitting Super Middleweight. This is
great for the WBO but it still shows inequality with the other
bodies. But you can argue that there aren't enough boxers in the
heavier-weight divisions to have these heavier-weight rankings.
Between the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight divisions, there
are five boxers ranked. No one is ranked in the Light
Heavyweight division, however, we know of the WBO Light
Heavyweight champion Geovana Peres would have been on top. In
the cruiserweight division, South African Razel Mohammed ranked
first with Nigerian boxer Bolatito Oluwole ranked second. As for
the top three in the Heavyweight division, New Zealanders Lani
Daniels and Alrie Meleisea take the 1st and 2nd spots. Oxandia
Castillo takes the third spot in the rankings. The rest of the
weight divisions are filled, except for the super middleweight
division which has nine spots filled.
Another obvious difference between WBO and the rest of the
bodies is that WBO only ranks top 10. WBA only rank top 12, IBF
top 15 and WBC top 39. With men, all bodies rank top 15, apart
from WBC who do top 40. Again this could come down to a lack of
enough boxers in certain divisions, but this is still an
improvement from having no women's rankings at all.
