Nicila Costello fails to make weight in World title fight
by Benjamin Watt
December 2, 2022

(DEC 2) Nicila Costello failed to make weight ahead of her WIBA World Flyweight title opportunity ahead of her fight against Jasmine Parr. The fight will still happen. Unfortunately, the title will only be up for grabs for Jasmine Parr.

The fight between Costello and Parr is a rematch between the two is the co-Main Event for tomorrow night's fight night in the gold coast. This fight is almost exactly one year since the last time they fought. This time the fight was scheduled for a WIBA World title.

Weigh-ins are part of the process for any boxing or combat sport. The lower the weight limit, the more difficult it is for the boxer herself. The weight division for the world title is in the Flyweight division, which is the limit set at 50.8kgs.

It is unknown what weight Costello weighed in as. However, she did take to social media to announce she missed weight. “Unfortunate morning in the office today. Having missed on the scales means the win doesn’t get me the belt tomorrow night. Nonetheless, the fight is official, and of course, the result stays the same as it always was going to be!”

Traditionally in boxing titles fights, if a boxer misses weight, they are given two hours after the initial weigh-in to make weight for the appropriate weight division. If they can not make weight, then the fight can still happen. However, they forfeit their opportunity for the title. In some cases, the boxer who fails to make weight will also forfeit one-third of their purse, given to the opponent. Women boxers will also get half a pound leeway when weighing in, meaning they can only go overweight by 0.22 kgs, which men boxers do not have the privilege to have.

The main event of the evening will be between New Zealand-born Australian boxer Ricky Esilva taking on late replacement undefeated boxer Luke Modini for the ANBF Australasian Cruiserweight title. Australian-born Maori boxer Clay AJ Waterman will also be on the card.

Despite not making weight and being unable to fight for the title, the fight will continue. A lot is still on the line as a win for Costello will not only avenge her loss against Parr last year but will also lead to other opportunities, including possibly being ranked in the sanctioning bodies and possibly more world title shots.
