Five Movies Women Boxers Would Love To Watch
July 14, 2022

The history of boxing dates as far back as Ancient Greek. It has been around for a very long time, and now it is popularly acknowledged as one of the most lucrative and entertaining sports of all time.

Being one of the most popular sports in the world, it shouldn't come as a surprise that films based on boxing are quite relevant to the entertainment industry, which is why many people continue betting on UFC. In fact, it could even be argued that boxing films are more popular than other genres of sports in the world, as they are always heavy on drama and action. Several boxing movies have been produced and released to the world over the years, with some of them being based on women's boxing which has been growing in popularity over the last decade.

In this article, we will be listing out a few of the best women's boxing films you should watch in 2022.

The Opponent (2000)

Released in 2000 and directed by Eugene Jarecki, The Opponent is one of the best movies a female boxer should watch as it is packed with action and an amazing story.

The Opponent revolves around the life of Patty Sullivan who started taking boxing lessons to protect herself from her abusive boyfriend. A fellow boxer, June, soon discovered her talent in boxing, who introduced her to a trainer, Tommy. Soon, her life changed as Tommy took her through rigorous training for her professional debut. It is a thrilling watch.

Mary Kom (2014)

Mary Kom is another popular boxing movie. Released in 2014, the film is based on the legendary Indian amateur boxer of the same name. Directed by Omung Kumar, the movie starred Priyanka Chopra, Darshan Kumaar and Sunil Thapa. The movie became the first Hindi movie to be screened on the opening day of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014.

Being a biographical sports film, the movie was centred on a young woman who came across an iconic coach in a boxing gym. She confessed her aspirations for boxing to the coach in hopes of convincing him to train her into a boxer. It's one of the best female boxing movies you should consider watching.

Bruised (2021)

Released in 2020, Bruised premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival before it was released on streaming platforms like Netflix in November 2021. The boxing film was Halle Berry's directional debut.

Bruised tells the tale of Jackie Justice (Halle Berry), who currently lives with her boyfriend Desi four years after forfeiting a major fight as a UFC fighter. Her life started taking a major turn when her 6-year-old son, Manny, returned to her doorstep. Jackie now has to fight her demons.

Chick Fight (2020)

Chick Fight is an American action-comedy film directed by Paul Leyden. While it doesn't seem heavy on the action side, its comedic scenes will leave you laughing while watching the movie.
The plot revolves around Anna Wyncomb, who works in a coffee shop with her dad. She and her best friend, Charleen, accidentally set the shop on fire, with the former blaming herself for the incident. She was introduced to an all-female underground fight club to turn her life around. She discovers that the fight club is connected to her life.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Million Dollar Baby could be regarded as the best women's boxing film of all time. It grossed $216 million worldwide at the box office, as Clint Eastwood directed Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman to make this amazing movie.

Released in 2004, it tells the story of a veteran Los Angeles boxing trainer, who only associates with two of his old friends. This was the case until Maggie Fitzgerald came into his life seeking his expertise. He eventually decided to train her, and both of them form a bond that change their lives.

Conclusion

While there are several films based on women's boxing, the aforementioned are some of the best ones to be made.
