(MAY 4) On the 30th of April, Lani Daniels defeated Sequita Hemingway by unanimous decision. The two will get another shot at each other on the 25th of June at The Plaza in Putaruru but this time for a New Zealand title.

Lani Daniels who is a descendant of Te Tai Tokerau, from Ngāti Hine which is part of the wider Ngāpuhi, fought against Sequita Hemingway on the 30th of April in her first professional boxing fight in two and a half years. The judges scored the fight 60-54, 59-55, 58-56 with all judges scoring Lani Daniels as the win. Before the fight, Lani Daniels was ranked 9th in the WBA.

Lani Daniels has accomplished a lot in her career including Two time New Zealand Amateur champion in 2014 and 2015, former New Zealand National (NZPBA version) Light Heavyweight champion and former New Zealand National (Pro Box NZ version) Super Middleweight champion. With her two New Zealand professional title wins, Lani Daniels became the first female boxer to win two New Zealand national titles from two different weight divisions and two different commissioning bodies. In 2019, Lani Daniels Competed for the WBO World Light Heavyweight title against Geovana Peres in the first-ever New Zealander vs. New Zealander boxing fight for a World title.

With her return to boxing, this will open a lot more doors for international fights, possible world title opportunities and increase rankings in the major four sanctioning bodies of the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO. The current World titleholder in the Heavyweight division is Hanna Gabriels who holds the WBA and WBC World heavyweight titles. The WBO and IBF titles are still currently vacant.

On June 25th at The Plaza in Putaruru, Lani Daniels will have a rematch with Sequita Hemingway.

Sequita Hemingway who is the descendant of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāi Tūhoe is hoping to avenge the first professional loss of her career. Before getting into Professional boxing, Sequita was a professional rugby player as part of the Farah Palmer Cup team, The Manawatu Cyclones.

Sequita started boxing as a corporate boxer and she found love in boxing. She made her professional boxing debut in July 2021 against former WBA 3rd and WBC 8th ranked boxer Alrie Melesiea. Sequita made the biggest upset of the year in New Zealand Boxer when she won by Majority decision.

The two Maori women will be competing for the vacant New Zealand national (Pro Box NZ version) Heavyweight title, which no female has won in this commissioning body. It is very rare for two Maori boxers to compete against each other for a New Zealand title, especially in the female division, which makes it another positive step for the indigenous community and female boxing community in New Zealand.

So far the last two women to have held the New Zealand Heavyweight title in the women's divisions were Alrie Meleisea in 2017 and Sarah Long in 2018, both under the NZPBA body.

Nigel Elliot of NJE Promotions and Ace Fighters will be promoting the event for the evening. The main event for the evening will be Joshua Chucky Francis v Laurence Titter for the vacant New Zealand National (Pro Box NZ version) Cruiserweight title. Joshua Francis who already holds the ANBF Australasian title and New Zealand National (PBCNZ version) title is hoping to capturing his second New Zealand title of his career.
