Mea Motu Calls out World Champion after win
by Benjamin Watt
May 1, 2022

(MAY 1) Mea Motu calls out the IBF Super Bantamweight champion Cherneka Johnson after the biggest win of her career so far against Baby Nansen.

Mea Motu took on the veteran Baby Nansen in the main event of the evening in what was described as a close but dirty fight. Mea won the fight by unanimous decision, capturing her fourth New Zealand national title, extending the record for most New Zealand titles held by a female boxer, which she claimed earlier this year.

The fight went the full eight-round, which was a tough fight for both the judges to score and the referee in the ring. In the first round of the fight, both boxers didn't have a moment to feel each other out as they went straight at it. After that, it seemed that both boxers were slightly rattled and had given each other respect for the power that both boxers possessed.

Throughout the fight Baby would play a rough game as each round she would either try to keep extremely close which made it difficult for both boxers to truly throw, Baby would push forward to get her in a better position or hold or try to wrestle Mea in hope to tire her out.

It was a surprise that Referee Darcy Williams didn't have better control or stepped in more when Baby Nansen was doing all the holding and wrestling as this seemed to be consistent throughout the fight. To give Baby credit, she came in with a game plan which made it difficult for Mea, however, this also made it difficult for herself.

It was an extremely close fight with some rounds that could have gone either way. The most exciting rounds were both the first and last rounds of the fight as both boxers had the most energy and landed the cleaner hits. It showed how tough Baby was when an accidental head clash happened during Baby moment of pushing forward, and Baby received a cut on her middle left eyebrow in the last 30 seconds in the last round.

Throughout the fight, Mea stayed composed and handled each situation that baby presented to her. Even though both fighters would throw multiple combinations, Mea would always be the one landing just that slightly quicker throughout the fight.

The 400 people in the audience were split 50/50 throughout the fight and even when the results were announced. However, it was a close fight in which both boxers deserved recognition.

After the fight when Mea was announced the winner, Mea went onto the mic calling out Cherneka Johnson in hoping for a historical World title fight. Never in the history of boxing have we had two New Zealand Maori boxers fight for a world title. Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand or what they call the home country “Aotearoa”.

Now that Cherneka Johnson holds the IBF Super Bantamweight title, it seems to be more likely to happen for this historic fight to happen.

Mea Motu also called out everyone in New Zealand between Super Bantamweight to Super Lightweight (55.34 kgs to 63.5 kgs or 122Ibs to 140 Ibs) to take her own. She said she wants to fight at Super Bantamweight because she always has to go up in weight to fight other people, but she is willing to take on anyone.
