(MAY 2) The UK born New
Zealand Kickboxer, Muay Thai Fighter and Professional Boxer
Michelle Preston will be making her in-ring return to the boxing
ring in over five years against New Zealand Amateur Champion
Holly McMath.
The last time Michelle Preston
was in a professional boxing ring was in Argentina in December
2016, with her second attempt for a major world boxing title.
However, in a rematch against Debora Anahi Dionicius, she was
not successful. Since then she retired from Boxing, Kickboxing
and Muay Thai after her final fight in November 2017 when she
captured the Women’s World WBC Muay Thai Super Flyweight Title.
Michelle Preston made her professional boxing debut in Australia
back in 2007 when she took on the Hometown favourite, Georgia
Keady. It showed professional boxing came to her naturally when
she won her debut fight in enemy territory.
After her debut win, she went on to become a trailblazer for
women's boxing by doing a lot of firsts. In December 2007 she
became the first female to win the WBA - PABA title in any
division. In November 2008, she became the first female to fight
for the WBC - OPBF title in any division. In July 2010, she
become the first female to win the WBO Asia Pacific title in any
division. And finally, in November 2010 she became the first
female to win a New Zealand national professional title by
stoppage in any division.
As well as she deserved all her achievements, she was ranked
highly in all the sanctioning bodies. The biggest win of her
career was in American Noemi Bosques who had a record of 10 - 5
- 2 at the time and was ranked highly in the world boxing
bodies. Michelle Preston had not fought in over 3 years at the
time and she came out of the fight with a Majority Decision Win
in New Zealand.
Recently Michelle Preston had the interest to come back to the
professional boxing ring, however, she and her team had trouble
with both the pandemic and finding suitable opponents, as there
were not a lot of options in her weight division in New Zealand.
Now that the borders are open and the pandemic seems to calm
down, it is more likely she can be active.
She was on hot top recently as New Zealand born Australian
champion Nicila Costello showed interest in fighting Michelle
Preston in the future.
She initially retired from professional boxing with a record of
8 - 8 - 1 with two wins by KO.
She will be taking a boxer who just had major success in the
recent New Zealand Amateur national championships Holly McMath.
Holly McMath is a three-time New Zealand amateur champion, with
her most recent win over the bronze medalist at the 2018
commonwealth games Tasmyn Benny. Holly McMath originally tried
out professional boxing, however, being at such a low weight,
she was unable to get fights in boxing without going up in
weight divisions.
Holly McMath made her professional boxing debut in February
2020, right before the pandemic really kicked off. She took on
Elli Bliss Reynolds but lost by Majority Decision. Her opponent
was heavier, bigger and had an advantage, and Holly's team does
not want to make the same mistake again.
Holly went back to fighting in amateur boxing, but also took up
Kickboxing and Muay Thai fighting. She is under the trainer
Terry Reid Batchelor who is the same trainer for WBO Light
Heavyweight champion Geovana Peres who also has turned to
Kickboxing and Muay Thai.
Now after Holly's win in the national championships and some
good wins in Kickboxing, she is hoping to restart her career in
Professional boxing with a massive fight against the two-time
world title contender Michelle Preston.
The fight between Michelle Preston and Holly McMath will happen
at the Auckland Museum on the 20th of May on the Jerome
Pampellone vs Nikolas Charalampous.
