(APR 30) After two and a
half years of being away from the boxing ring, Lani Daniels made
her in-ring return against professional rugby player turned
professional boxer, Sequita Hemingway.
Lani Daniels despite being inactive, is still ranked 9th in the
WBA took on Sequita Hemingway who is well known for her win over
WBC and WBA ranked boxer Alrie Melesiea. Even though she has not
fought in a long time, she made it look like she was only in the
ring yesterday with the performance she gave.
Lani Daniels is a two-division
New Zealand national champion and also a two time New Zealand
National Amateur Champion. Tonight that experience showed
against her opponent who was only having her second professional
fight.
She simply out-boxed her opponent, making Sequita miss and
landing some powerful shots. At the start of every round, Lani
would almost run at her opponent, just ready to get the next
round started.
She would move around a lot, but there were moments where
Sequita would stay stationary in the corner in hopes to begin a
brawl, but even then Lani would outbox and land combinations to
the body.
Giving credit where it's due, Sequite came to fight. She didn't
make it easy for Lani. When she landed, it would hit Lani like a
train. Especially when she landed the left hooks to the face,
you can tell that Lani could feel. Lani showed great stamina as
Sequita was extremely fatigued in the last two rounds, with
Lani's punch output being great.
After this unanimous decision win, we are expecting Lani to be a
lot more active than she has been in the past three years. I
wouldn’t be surprised if she would get a major ranking to boost
in the WBA or even be introduced in the WBC rankings. On top of
that, the IBF and WBO World titles are indeed vacant and the
current world heavyweight champion Hanna Gabriels has yet to
defend her title.
It would be very interesting to see what happens next for Lani
Daniels, also her interest in going down in the weight division
as well.
